What if kids’ screen time was not a waste of time, but an experience that helped kids learn, become critical thinkers, develop social and emotional skills, and even get up and move? I am passionate about improving children’s digital media experiences to make this vision a reality.I studied children’s literature, but I was inspired by Fred Rogers’ work (and a well-timed graduate school class in interactive narrative and artificial intelligence) to move into digital media production. At PBS KIDS, my team and our amazing TV producers develop interactive games, apps, streaming video services, parenting articles, activity ideas, and tips for making the most out of media. At PBS KIDS Digital, we conduct a lot of research, most recently with augmented reality games, wearable technologies, and adaptive and personalized digital learning experiences for young children. We are especially focused on bringing great content and experiences to kids in lower-income households, inspired to make our content come alive on an especially broad range of devices. PBS KIDS digital media is visited by more than 13 million kids a month. In my role as head of PBS KIDS Digital, I have the opportunity to speak at a range of conferences and forums on topics such as educational technology, gaming, and parenting in the digital age. Some of my articles and presentations are linked below.Outside of work hours, I am a mom and military spouse. My husband, two young kids, and I have moved five times in the last six years. I’ve been able to keep my work intact thanks to great teleworking policies from PBS, incredible support from the military family community, and lots of advice from many working mom friends and mentors. I love sharing tips for cross-country flights with infants and toddlers – my kids and I have logged thousands of miles together.
