Senior Research Scientist And Project Manager - British Atmospheric Data Centre
I am an expert in the dissemination of critical data sets related to fundamental research, specifically through the mechanism of formal data citation, and data curation. My work is key to enhancing our understanding and providing efficient monitoring of key scientific datasets covering such topics as climate change. A vital aspect of my activity is to project manage and underpin the data citation activities of NERC through the STFC hosted NERC British Atmospheric Data Centre (BADC), and I am recognised both nationally and internationally as a leading exponent in my field. My work requires considerable interaction with international organisations such as DataCite, CODATA and other national and international data centres and libraries.Significant projects:• Currently project managing CLIPC (Climate Information Platform for Copernicus), an FP7 project which will provide access to climate information of direct relevance to a wide variety of users, from scientists to policy makers and private sector decision makers. This project involves 22 international partners, with a budget of 7.8 million Euros. I also lead the dissemination work package.• Project manager for the Peer REview for Publication & Accreditation of Research Data in the Earth sciences (PREPARDE) project, which aimed to improve the workflows, cross-linking and peer-review processes for data publication, funded by Jisc and NERC. It brought together partners from academia (University of Reading, University of Leicester) with industrial partners (F1000, Wiley-Blackwell).• Project manager for Metafor: Common Metadata for Climate Modelling Digital Repositories. The main objective of METAFOR was to develop a Common Information Model (CIM) to describe climate data and the models that produce it in a standard way, and to ensure the wide adoption of the CIM. There were 12 project partners with a project budget of 2.8 million Euro. I lead work package 7, which was concerned with training and dissemination.
Senior Research Scientist - Radio Communications Research Unit
During my time in the RCRU, I bid for and won ten contracts put out to tender as part of Ofcom’s Spectrum Efficiency Scheme, for a combined value of over £1.5 million. Of those contracts, I led and project managed eight, as well as providing technical input. Details of the most significant projects which I led are below:• “Impact of introducing Automatic Transmit Power Control in P-P Fixed Service Systems operating in bands above 13 GHz”, completed December 2005 and its extension “Soft Boundary Frequency Assignment Techniques and Adaptive Coding and Modulation”, completed December 2006. The consortium included an industrial partner, Aegis Systems Limited. I had sole responsibility for the RCRU’s technical contribution to the work, and received many positive comments from Ofcom regarding my project management skills. • “Improving Spectral Efficiency of Fixed Link Services”, completed September 2006. The other members of the project consortium were from industry (Roke Manor Research Ltd) and academia (Cass Business School). The project investigated new technologies, combinations of technologies and frequency assignment strategies with the potential to improve the spectrum efficiency of fixed link services.• “Spectrum exploitation for non-terrestrial systems operating above 10 GHz”, completed January 2007.This project was mainly concerned with the GBS site diversity experiment run by the RCRU with satellite beacon receivers at a frequency of 20.7 GHz. The aim was to investigate site diversity’s effectiveness as a fade mitigation technique and the cost-benefit analysis for rolling it out across the satellite communications industry. Consortium partners were Qinetiq and EADS Astrium, both commercial companies.
