My tasks included maintaining the integrity of medical records, coordinating patient hospital transfer, and coordinating physician meetings or phone consultations. Our unit had mostly geriatric Alzheimer and Dementia patients. I assisted medical staff in the care and comfort of patients during their stay. I oversaw patients on watch precautions, fed patients, and provided materials to staff or patients. I learned about the inside workings of hospitals and gained experience working with geriatric patients which was a new experience for me compared to working with pediatric patients.

Towson University Emotion Science Lab- I completed an undergraduate Honors thesis in Psychology on the interaction of Anxiety and Heart Rate Variability on Executive Function. I led a team of research assistants and presented at multiple conferences. I improved my public speaking and time management skills. I also learned to utilize creativity when it comes to modifying and forming procedures.

Laboratory of Comparative Neuroscience- In this lab we studied neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimers and Parkinson’s disease. We researched the effects of spatial learning and memory in rat models. We performed Morris water maze experiments, histological studies, and stereotaxic surgery to assess changes in brain structure. Our topics of interest expanded my knowledge in Neuroscience and emulated my way of thinking. The literature opened my eyes to the abundance of knowledge in this field, which left me always wanting to learn and grow. This everlasting curiosity will bring a positive outlook to my career as a physician.

My responsibilities included transcribing and compiling medical chart information for physicians in a pediatric emergency department. I witnessed the emotional rollercoaster that children go through while in the hospital. I was able to assist with the emotion regulation of patients by helping console them while the physician was performing procedures. I was quite fond of this experience because I was always learning and growing. I often discussed differential diagnoses of cases with the physicians who were happy to answer my endless questions.
