Sarah M. Email and Phone Number
Sarah Martin specializes in developing and implementing projects with an emphasis on economic development and developing marketplaces that provide opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in all parts of the supply chain. She has a passion for Indigenous art and small business incubation and is the founder of the Blak markets which has now run at Bare Island, La Perouse for 11 years with other markets at other locations around Sydney and now in regional NSW locations including Broken Hill, Moree and Huskisson. The Blak Markets has helped incubate at least 100 small Indigenous businesses around arts, craft and bushfoods.Seven years ago she expanded the Blak Markets model nationally by the incorporation of the Heart in Art program to include remote Indigenous art centres in the Blak Markets model through the National Indigenous Art Fair which ran for the fourth time in 2024 attracting 12,000 people over 2 days and generating over $800,000 which went directly to local stallholders and remote art centres.Four years ago she facilitated the first National Indigenous Bushfood Symposium and spent two years as the Secretariat working with an all Indigenous working group to set up the First Nations Bushfood and Botanical Alliance Australia. This builds on her work of 8 years as director of Koori Communications and Training who developed cultural reconnection programs which won many awards and have now been emulated across NSW. The company received a National award for economic development excellence for this work. Previously she has worked as the Communications Manager, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, Red Cross and Communications Manager for the Department of Human Services(formerly NSW Department of Aboriginal Affairs). She also worked for the Human Rights Commissioner, Tom Calma. She has developed a number of communication strategies targeting Indigenous communities including a road safety campaign for RTA which used radio ads, brochures and a poster campaign and she developed a newsletter for the Aboriginal community at La Perouse.
