When the House was amending the State Budget, I was in charge of drafting, filing, and tracking Chair Gordon's amendments.I also took on a managerial role in this position. I assist the Staff Director in overseeing the Legislative Aide and assist and advise on constituent cases. In the summer of 2021, I served as a mentor to the interns that joined us virtually. When the new legislative session began in 2021, Chair Gordon gave me the opportunity to propose legislation. I am passionate about the intersections between environmental health, sustainable agriculture, and environmental justice, and proposed that he file a bill banning the use of chlorpyrifos in agriculture in Massachusetts and create a commission to study its use non-agriculturally. I wrote it and Chair Gordon filed it. Ken Gordon, I served as a liaison between the Representative and his constituents, collaborated with federal, local, and other state government offices, wrote and edited office communications, managed constituent cases, drafted and filed legislation, and prepared the Representative for debates and votes. Rep. Gordon's office prioritized office communications during the COVID-19 pandemic in an effort to quickly relay information about the rapidly developing situation to his constituents. The office primarily communicated with constituents via social media and press releases that were sent to local media outlets, and during the height of the pandemic, we were issuing press updates at least once every other day. As Legislative Aide, I either wrote or edited almost all of these communications.I also managed the majority of the office's constituent cases. During the first year of the pandemic, many constituents contacted us for help with their unemployment claims. It was my responsibility to reach out to these constituents, diffuse their frustration, and collaborate with the Department of Unemployment Assistance to facilitate a resolution. In addition to unemployment cases, I also frequently worked health insurance- and housing-related cases. In the health insurance cases, I served as a liaison between constituents, MassHealth, and/or the Health Connector to help them receive them coverage to which they were entitled. For housing cases, I connected constituents with state housing assistance programs (such as RAFT), heating assistance, and other economic assistance programs through the Department of Transitional Assistance. My primary project was to develop a "tool-kit" of campus resources and practical information that the Alternative Breaks team could use to plan a low-waste and energy conscious trip. While completing that project, I also met with students who had received Civic Engagement grant money, and helped them make environmentally sustainable and socially responsible consumer choices with their purchasing power. As the program's coordinator, I was in charge of running meetings, helping Eco-Reps meet project deadlines, and turning student ideas into projects. The Eco-Rep program expanded rapidly while I was the Coordinator, which challenged me to invent new methods of structural organization and data management. From the beginning to end of my tenure, the number of Eco-Reps in the program increased from seven to 24, and the number of Sustainable Living Certifications completed per year grew from 47 in 2016-2017 to 95 in 2017-2018. In order to meet the changing needs of program, I established protocols for data entry that carefully tracked the flow of program materials, and I began creating detailed instruction sheets for every project. My goal during my final semester as Eco-Rep Coordinator was to ensure that the increased program size and productivity could be sustained after my graduation. I helped secure program continuity by creating a manual for future Eco-Rep Coordinators, which describes effective leadership practices, suggests solutions to challenges that future coordinators might face, and identifies areas for growth within the program. The resident received points for what they were already doing well, and we would identify habits in need of improvement. I submitted memos about my findings that staff at the EDF could use to create fact sheets and blog posts on the subject. I also worked with the Field Operations team to draft newsletters and build connections between the EDF and contacts at major newspapers. Interning at the EDF allowed me to participate in a number of events and professional development opportunities outside of the office. I attended the the House and Senate Appropriations Committee hearings for the EPA budget, the 2017 Play-In for Climate Action, and a BlueGreen Alliance panel on toxics in consumer products. I also participated in the National Climate Leadership Summit, where I met with other students and young professionals from around the country and learned about building effective communication and advocacy skills. The three-day summit culminated with a meeting I scheduled with my US Congressman to discuss environmental concerns specific to my home community.
