I am an Assistant Professor of History at University of South Carolina.I have taught numerous college courses: such as modern South Asian history, gender and history of the Indian Ocean world from medieval times to present. My research expertise is on the history of South Asian Islam and the shaping of modern Muslim communities in global and local contexts, as well as political movements across the India Pakistan divide. My first book is titled, Hidden Histories of Pakistan: Censorship, Literature and Secular Nationalism in Late Colonial India, published by Cambridge University Press. I have also published articles in Modern Asian Studies, HimalSouthAsia, and Postcolonial Text.I am a historian who draws upon multiple scholarly methodologies from history, comparative literature and anthropology. My second book-length project, which has been granted a Fulbright Research Award, is focused upon the life and world of the “warrior queen” Chand Bibi Sultan, a 16th century Queen Regent of the Deccan Sultanates in medieval south India.I have directed Study Abroad Programs in India and led students and faculty in India, where I have also worked with Davidson College student research assistants. I regularly advise students with interests in traveling to South Asia for internships, research, or language study. Elsewhere at liberal arts colleges across the US, I have also taught courses about Premodern / Ancient India, South Asia After 1947, and Religion and Politics in South Asia.
