Peter's Irish Pub is a popular sports pub/restaurant in Maastricht that attracts many expatriates. On busy nights the pub was run by three people, and my job required a high level of multi-tasking, taking orders, pouring drinks and serving food with over 70 people in the pub. The large international community required good communication and an understanding of different cultures. The work demanded competent sociability and patience, creating relationships with the patrons. This was done during my bachelor and masters courses, which required strict time management and organization to keep up with my studies. I took on a managerial role when the owner was not around, and took charge during parties and events, such as live music and karaoke nights, which brought in 100+ people.

nVision Global Technology Solutions is a freight invoicing and auditing company. During my four months at this company, I was provided a basic understanding of how their software works in providing logistics and information management services. This job gave me unique insight into the multifarious levels of corporate work and structure. I learned and appreciated how in a corporation every task and position plays an integral role in the functioning of the company.

Austin, Texas

This internship provided a brief overview of the importance of watersheds and land catchments and the steps taken by the City of Austin in Texas to preserve these watersheds. I had hands on experience removing debris after heavy rainfall from ‘swallet’ grates, to allow the water to flow into the aquifer. I was also a part of a stakeholder steering committee, which provided a clear understanding on the importance of communication and providing knowledge to all relevant stakeholders, as well as the importance of negotiation. The entire department relied and communicated data through a live geographic information system (GIS), to which I was provided an introductory lesson.
