When I was in my twenties wondering why anyone would study Human Resources. It seemed like one of those degrees that did not mean anything. Flash forward 20 years and I have an MBA and work in Human Resources, as well as teach business courses at local colleges, including human resources. It is funny how things work out.I have been fortunate enough to work in several industries in many roles, and have gained a wide variety of skills from that. I have found that skills you gain throughout life can be applied to your chosen field. While many people would wonder how many a costume designer translates to a human resources coordinator, I see the skills of time management, organization, planning, and teamwork learned from one translate perfectly to the other. I often tell students that sometimes the benefits of a class they take in more about learning how to learn, than the material itself.My path may not have been a straight line, but the zig-zag journey has allowed me to gather amazing skills including teaching, supervisory, Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, web design, social media management, bookkeeping, income tax preparation, time management, benefits administration, onboarding, recruiting, creating and presenting employee training and presentations to large groups and more. I can tell you the right collar for a Victorian shirt, and I can tell you how plastic injection molding works.
