Journeys can be enjoyable alone, but taking people on the journey with you enables great things to be achieved. I was once sat with a lead designer who told me how six weeks in, her new starter still didn’t have access to the systems and data they needed. The frustrations were evident, and it turned out this was a common theme the more people I spoke to. She said to me:“Please can you try and do something to help me?”, so I did, and here is briefly how: …Conducted an inventory of applications and data (you can’t protect what you don’t know about).…Carried out group wide access reviews, in order to move to a role-based access control model.…Created a specialist access management function to take the burden off the service desk (and prevent that old “the user can’t access the Buying folder, so I have added them into these 23 other groups to see if that fixes it”. No blame there, without an inventory how would they know right?).…Streamlined the account creation process, with a same day response time to any issues.I am passionate about user experience, the workforce must be productive, and access controls must be designed to enable them, whilst still following the Zero Trust principle and protecting the organisation. That’s the challenge and what I love doing.What is my story? 16 years in the Army really shapes the person you become, the discipline, the integrity, and the sense of loyalty to those around never leaves you. Mix this with the experience I gained whilst being part of an enterprise scale organisation as a senior infrastructure engineer before specialising in Identity and Access Management and you get me, with my unique and blended set of skills. But how did I end up here? After years of dragging servers and storage arrays from warehouse bays to top floor data centres, middle of the night data migrations, being told the storage was too slow when it was always the network, I suddenly realised I was done with being an infrastructure engineer and I needed a new direction to travel.
