As a part of The Network’s Community Scholars program, I received first-hand experience in policy and advocacy. I used skills and interests surrounding community revitalization through working alongside Senior Policy Advisor, Arnold Cohen. I attended legislative sessions where I met several New Jersey Legislators and advocated for affordable housing funds. I organized comprehensive data on affordable homes in the state in order to provide the information to the Network’s member organizations, state and federal legislators, as well as the community at large. I also helped to plan and coordinate one of The Network’s largest advocacy days, their Legislative Day at New Jersey’s State House. We were successfully able to advocate for protecting the Affordable Housing Trust Fund in the state’s budget. I sent out emails and made calls urging our members to join our Opportunity Starts at Home Campaign, which is a long-term, multi-sector campaign to meet the rental housing needs of the nation’s low-income people. Along with this campaign I also created infographic fact-sheets using Venngage for all of New Jersey’s twenty-one counties. The fact-sheets including wage and rent disparities, eviction numbers, foreclosure data, as well as information on people experiencing homelessness in the county. Show less
