I am working to connect residents facing housing issues due to COVID-19 with advanced housing counselors and other pertinent resources in order to prevent evictions and foreclosures. I manage the development, implementation, tracking, and reporting of three separate grants with similar goals to combat evictions and foreclosures, and bring valuable resources and information to NJ’s most vulnerable residents.

I used… Show more The Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey (The Network) is a statewide association of over 250 non-profit housing and community development corporations, individuals, professional organizations, and prominent New Jersey corporations that support the creation of housing choices and economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income community residents. As a part of The Network’s Community Scholars program, I received first-hand experience in policy and advocacy. I used skills and interests surrounding community revitalization through working alongside Senior Policy Advisor, Arnold Cohen. I attended legislative sessions where I met several New Jersey Legislators and advocated for affordable housing funds. I organized comprehensive data on affordable homes in the state in order to provide the information to the Network’s member organizations, state and federal legislators, as well as the community at large. I also helped to plan and coordinate one of The Network’s largest advocacy days, their Legislative Day at New Jersey’s State House. We were successfully able to advocate for protecting the Affordable Housing Trust Fund in the state’s budget. I sent out emails and made calls urging our members to join our Opportunity Starts at Home Campaign, which is a long-term, multi-sector campaign to meet the rental housing needs of the nation’s low-income people. Along with this campaign I also created infographic fact-sheets using Venngage for all of New Jersey’s twenty-one counties. The fact-sheets including wage and rent disparities, eviction numbers, foreclosure data, as well as information on people experiencing homelessness in the county. Show less

As a Community Planning and Development intern at Isles, I worked with the Urban Agriculture Department to help improve, create and sustain various community gardens throughout the city. I learned not only how to tend to the gardens, but I also the value of being able to provide affordable, fresh foods to Trenton’s citizens. Here, I was able to interact with the local community and educate them about other issues Isles focuses on such as lead testing, financial education, and environmental training.Along with my work in Isles’ community gardens, I was also able to help revamp their Mobile Recreation Unit (T-Recs). The Unit allows games and sports equipment to be available to residents of all ages and abilities. I researched and ordered all new equipment for the Unit, and was able to assist in its use. Setting up in differing parks around Trenton, I engaged with community members to play outside and have fun with an array of free games and activities. Through this experience, I was able to capitalize on my passions surrounding food security, healthy communities, and education to help provide Trenton’s residents with accessible healthy foods and fun outdoor activities.
