Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Since 2020, I have been a Mitacs Accelerate Postdoctoral Researcher in partnership with Ducks Unlimited Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and Acadia University. I am leading a research program addressing shifts in sea duck populations in Atlantic Canada over the past 50 years. I am using various data sources from federal and provincial government monitoring, non-governmental organizations (e.g., Ducks Unlimited Canada, Birds Canada), and citizen science programs (e.g., Christmas Bird Count) to examine changes in bird abundance and distribution in marine regions through time, and explore potential causal factors for trends or redistribution. The results will help direct future, multi-stakeholder marine policy and long-term planning for waterbird harvest, management and conservation in Atlantic Canada. From 2018-2020, I held a W. Garfield Weston Postdoctoral Fellowship award from the Canadian Northern Studies Trust under the Association of Canadian Universities for Northern Studies, and I proudly call myself an alumni Weston Family Northern Scientist. My research investigated multi-scale climactic factors influencing breeding success of avifauna throughout the Canadian Arctic. I have been extremely fortunate to carry out my postdoctoral work under Dr. Mark Mallory at Acadia University.
