Secondment role for 6 months working as an Analyst within the secretariat of the Climate Change Committee. Led the Shipping sector and wrote the shipping chapter of the 2023 Progress Report to Parliament, made initial steps towards the development of the 7th Carbon Budget. Other duties included helping to coordinate sessions and meetings of the International Climate Councils Network.

NERC Industrial CASE PhD Studentship: Using annually resolved bivalve records and biogeochemical models to understand the shelf seasA PhD project in collaboration with the University of Exeter and CEFAS that aimed to combine the sclerochronological records of marine bivalves and biogeochemical models to better understand marine environmental variability in the UK shelf seas.

An ERSC (Economic and Social Research Council) and Exeter University joint project which is investigating the public and stakeholder responses to the Somerset Level Flooding that occurred in the 2013/14 winter. The aim of the research is to gain a better understanding of the problems and solutions involved in flood events and to potentially impact both regional and national policy response. My role was as an assistant to an Associate Research Fellow conducting many interviews with participating members of the public who were affected by the flooding. My main job-role was first to drive a hire car from the University of Exeter to the home of the interviewees on the Somerset Levels and secondly to assist the researcher in her interviews if needed. Through this I have gained invaluable experience in the process of qualitative research methods, especially in how to conduct interviews which were usually well over an hour long. I have also been given an interesting insight into the attitudes of the public towards the causes behind these flood events, including opinions of the actions of government agencies and on flooding and climate change.My role requires a great deal of trust and responsibility, as well as organisation, being something I have to fit in around my lectures and personal study time. The ad-hoc work will continue into the New Year (2015) where follow-up interviews will take place.

Part of the student-only team organising the first ever 'CLESCon' - a celebration of PGR research within the College of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Exeter. This was a one-day event aimed at giving postgraduate researchers an opportunity to present their research and develop networks within CLES which includes Geography, Biosciences, Psychology and Sports and Health Sciences. The day was organised into the following four themes:- Changing environments: earth processes, ecology and biodiversity- Frontiers in health and disease- Social networks, communities and interactions- Novel approaches and unexpected collaborationsThe event took place in the newly opened Living Systems Institute (LSI) on the University of Exeter's Streatham campus on Thursday 22nd June and it's success means it is set to become a popular annual event.I took on several key roles including social media advertising through Instagram and Twitter as well as designing and printing banners, posters, name badges, t-shirts and was integral in the recruitment of keynote speakers from Geography. Through the months of organisation for this event, I was able to hone many skills, the most important of which included teamwork, working to deadlines, time-management, planning and efficiency. Overall, the event, which was commended for its organisation and professionalism, could not have happened without such a motivated, enthusiastic and hard-working team. Update (Oct 2018)A successful CLESCon 2018 was run in October 2018 where I also took an active role in the organising committee. For my 3rd Year Dissertation at the University of Exeter, I chose to investigate the environmental/climate proxy of sclerochronology which uses the growth bands that appear on the carbonate shells of bivalve molluscs to infer recent palaeoclimate. The proxy is used in the same way as dendrochronology and my tutor, Dr Paul Halloran, formerly of the Met Office, is advising me throughout the research process to produce a high-quality piece of work.Bangor University's School of Ocean Sciences (SOS) specialises in the use of sclerochronology and after contacting them during my second year, I was invited by the head of department (Professor Chris Richardson) to conduct my research there over the summer.I spent two months living in Menai Bridge and working at least 5 days a week in the sclerochronology lab alongside PhD students and experts in the field such as Dr Paul Butler and Professor James Scourse, all of whom were extremely helpful and fantastic to work with. During my time at SOS, I was able to use the specialist equipment and software to process 30 shells.My 45-credit dissertation was completed in March 2015 and has given me a huge range of transferrable skills involved in completing a large independent research project, including data analysis and statistics, reading and summarising research and writing scientifically.My time at Bangor University was an incredible experience and a real insight into the world of scientific research and the hard-work and motivation required to work independently on a long-term project.

During my first year at Queen Mary University of London, I arranged volunteer work with FoodCycle in a café in Bromley-by-Bow. FoodCycle is a charity that uses leftover and out-of-date food from participating supermarkets to make cheap food for the community.My role was to help make the food which included curries, soups and cakes. I worked a part of a friendly team of volunteers once or twice a week. Whilst volunteering here I was able to complete a Basic Food Hygiene certificate.

During my gap year between college and university I volunteered in Ecuador with the geap year travel company, "The Leap" (http://theleap.co.uk/). As part of a team of 6 other volunteers and a team leader, we spent around 3 weeks in 3 different communities in the Andes, Coast and Costal Rainforest including the "Los Naranjas" Tsáchila tribe. This consisted of mostly manual labour work such as making natural dams to prevent drought in the coastal forests or childcare/play with children in the local school in Chilcapamba in the Ecuadorian Andes. The trip was both challenging and extremely interesting and allowed me to see a lot of the country of Ecuador. My Spanish-speaking abilities were also improved.

Job taken while in New Zealand on gap year between college and university. Serving food at a number of venues: either buffet or canapé service for large parties and events. Gave me greater confidence and experience in working in other countries.

During my gap year, I spent several months living in Tauranga, New Zealand where I worked and was able to volunteer with a PhD student from Auckland University conducting research on the marine mammals in the Bay of Plenty, off Tauranga, North Island. As part of this myself, the PhD student, myself and another volunteer would survey the bay in a small vessel, measuring various parameters such as SST (sea surface temperature) and water visibility along transects using GPS whilst also constantly searching for and recording any marine mammal activity. The study was an attempt to measure the affects of pleasure-boating and tourism in the Bay on the marine life. It gave me one of my first experiences in research and the importance of consistency and repetition while trying to be accurate despite variable weather and sea conditions and during long hours at sea.

In order to complete my CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) hours (150 in total) as part of the International Baccalaureate at Truro College, I volunteered for a project run by the Eden Project. After acquiring all 150 hours needed for CAS, I continued this as paid work.As part of a small team, my role was to help set up and run play days in a range of locations around Devon and Cornwall, including forests, parks and playgrounds. The project was aimed to encourage play in the out-door environment and included challenges for children of all ages and abilities including den-building, water play, camp-fire cooking as well as playing on swings and suspended nets, all of which we set up for each location.Some "play-days" were also in collaboration with Barnardo's Children's Charity, a project entitled "Muddy Shorts" which aimed to give parents of disabled children a short break while myself and other play-day coordinators would play with the children and "get muddy" in the outdoor environment.These play days were a wonderful experience, never failing to make both children and adults smile. They also showed many parents how easy it is to play outdoors rather than watch TV/play video games. The many play days I participated in, increased my confidence in communicating with the public and gave me a great deal of responsibility in making sure everyone was safe and enjoying themselves, no matter how long or physically exhausting the days were and whatever the weather.
