I analyzed molecular data to inform conservation planning for a gopher tortoise population at Ft. Benning, GA. I also helped write a computer program to determine the amount of genetic population differentiation within this population. After I linked the genetic dataset to a GIS database, I used Circuitscape, a conservation software developed by a Nature Conservancy employee, to examine potential barriers to tortoise movement and breeding.

I used molecular biology techniques to study evolution and characterize populations of black cohosh (Actaea racemosa), a medicinal herb. Our project identified variable microsatellite regions useful for measuring genetic diversity within the species. We also sequenced nuclear ITS regions of several Actaea species and found them to be potentially useful for DNA fingerprinting, as they differed by species.

WCU and the North Carolina Arboretum were partners on the Actaea racemosa grant. As part of that grant, I stewarded the USDA's Research Collection of Actaea racemosa (black cohosh) at Bent Creek, collected data on plant growth characteristics, prepared root material for phytochemical and genetic testing, and collected and prepared seed for deposit in the Repository.

I instructed majors and non-majors in Introductory Biology and Botany labs, prepared syllabi and testing materials, reviewed materials before exams, and helped to set up labs

I used ArcGIS to define conservation easement boundaries, researched properties for due diligence reviews before easements were placed, wrote a Clean Water Management Trust Fund grant (which was funded), and assisted the Natural Heritage Biologist with the Transylvania County Natural Heritage Inventory.
