Sarah Wilkinson became an interior designer after being surrounded by both residential and commercial design growing up watching her father’s career as a construction worker. It seemed natural for her to follow a career in the construction field and the decision to become an interior designer was solidified after working with her father’s firm for several summers. Sarah then went to Syracuse University for Environmental and Interior design where she quickly began to miss the practical and common sense attitude of construction and real world design. After two years of more conceptual learning in school, she looked for a professional application of design in the form of an internship. Sarah became an intern at a small residential kitchen and bath design firm where she rekindled her love of residential design and found a new passion in project management. After graduating, Sarah stayed in Upstate New York and quickly found a position in Ithaca, NY at John Snyder Architects. The small firm allowed Sarah to expand her knowledge and skillset to encompass all phases of design, from conception through construction management. The responsibilities as the only interior designer in the firm kept her engaged in all of the projects in the office whether as both a team player and a project manager. Being an integral part of a small office qualified Sarah with a number of skills including being adaptive, creative, and organized. The experience overall taught Sarah the importance of doing work that you enjoy, working with great team around you, and always expanding your horizons.
