TA Realty is a leading commercial real estate investment firm with $12b in assets under management. In Q4 2014 they were bought by The Rockefeller Group. During my 4 years at TA, I started as a Valuation Analyst and then became an Asset Manager. I managed a $1 billion portfolio of office buildings, warehouses, retail, and multifamily properties located in Miami, Charlotte, and Philadelphia. The properties totaled over 10 million square feet of suburban real estate. I know what you're thinking: that sounds GLAMOROUS. I had a fiduciary responsibility to our investors to maximize the value of their investment in our funds. I managed leasing agents and property managers who were on the ground in each market, and handled decisions about leasing and capital investment. My job was to make sure those buildings were full, we had high-quality tenants paying market rent, and we had a strong ROI on improvements during the 7-10 year hold period of each property.

This was my first job out of school and a very traditional corporate finance job. I did financial reporting and analysis for a financial services business unit. I reported to the CFO of the business unit and he was a tough boss but he taught me a lot. It took a long time to earn his respect and he tested me over and over, but once I had proven myself, I had a widespread reputation for producing impeccable work.I became an expert in multi-dimensional financial reporting in Excel. Anyone heard of Essbase? It was an Excel front-end that allowed us to look at the financials sliced and diced for inter-company allocations and activity-based P&Ls. Not only did I fly around in Excel whipping up spreadsheets and analyzing data, I made pretty reports that told the business story clearly. The best part was when they sent me to Paris for a 6 month work assignment. I assisted the CFO in the acquisition and integration of a business we had acquired there. At 25, that was pretty fantastic. When I returned, I got a hankering to work in a field with tangible assets; commercial real estate called my name, and I got a job at TA Realty (see above).
