I started my career breaking laws as a sting agent busting store owners for selling tobacco products to minors. I went on to making laws as a youth advocate for organizations like the American Cancer Society and Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids. We changed the legislation, but the legislation didn’t change people’s lives. I started an organization called Youth Infusion to bring young people and adults together to address social problems. Youth Infusion also failed to enable long-lasting change. I went on to study organizational structure & performance as a PhD student & Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University. I spent 3 years with civil servants in the UK, New Zealand, and the US observing where new ideas came from. My experience working within bureaucracies sparked my interest in redesigning them.I joined Participle to lead a project to redesign youth services. We developed a new platform for community and youth development using design thinking. Design proved a useful tool for change, but was missing rigorous social science thinking.In 2009, I co-founded InWithFor to bring a design + social science approach to solving social problems. From 2010-2013, we worked with The Australian Centre for Social Innovation to prototype and spread 3 solutions: Family by Family, Weavers, and Care Reflect. I learned how leadership and values matter.In 2013, I move to Amsterdam and joined forces with 2 designers. We called the next iteration of our work, InWithForward. InWithForward builds teams, in local communities, to understand the experience of living on the margins and co-design new support models. Since 2014, we've been in Canada partnering with non-profits to (1) collect ethnographic data, (2) make, test & embed solutions and (3) build organizational infrastructure for continuous innovation.
