I am a media psychologist. Specifically, I research the psychological and social functions of narrative entertainment. That is, how stories make us think and feel – and how we use them in our daily lives and relationships. I primarily use quantitative methods and experimental social science to answer questions about how we use media and stories, and how they affect us. I returned to academia because I wanted further opportunities to connect my scholarship, teaching and engagement efforts with a variety of publics. In past lives, I collaborated with talented people all over the world to create amazing things, including installations, publications and experiences. I have worked with arts bodies, governments, universities and cultural centers in Europe, the Americas, Asia, the Middle East and Australia. I've worked in non-profits and for-profits, with governments and embassies, and across education, campaigns, cultural tourism, communications, advising, international development, and as a writer and editor. In the end, all of my work centers on the power of stories, for both individuals and communities, and understanding their influence on our lives and behavior.
