Sasha Siegel Email and Phone Number
I am an infectious disease expert with broad experience in public health translational research and digital health. My passion is to develop strategic scientific products that improve infectious disease surveillance and health outcomes, as well as to catalyse progress in the broader digital health space. I work with scientific partners, public health organisations, and policymakers to ensure that we build tools for maximum translational impact - bringing timely interventions to where they're needed most. With the explosion of data-driven approaches to health, the digital health space is rapidly growing to shift the needle towards improving human health in exciting new ways. As Director of Healthwave Digital Innovations, I work with academic institutions to provide strategic leadership on pathways to translational impact - ranging from developing programme strategies, grantsmanship and funding opportunities, to fostering public-private partnerships and advising on digital health product development. My recent role as Executive Vice President of Infectious Disease at Airfinity led efforts to deliver cutting-edge infectious disease forecasting solutions that ultimately informed and improved the quality, speed, focus, and strategy for intervention delivery for public health good. Previously, my role as Genomic Surveillance Lead for MalariaGEN at the Wellcome Sanger Institute was to lead the scientific strategy and end-to-end operations for the design, development and implementation of translational genomic surveillance efforts, to conduct large-scale genomic surveillance operations in malaria-endemic countries. I led a large cross-functional team that built genomic surveillance assays, methodologies, analytical pipelines, web applications, and support to implementation operations. I've worked broadly in the malaria academic community throughout my career, largely focussed on genomics and surveillance activities. I've developed computational surveillance methods to improve clinical efficacy studies and treatment outcomes. Other projects explored malaria evolution that led to the evolutionary “jump” from gorillas to humans, as well as characterising transcriptional diversity in clinical infections.I obtained my PhD in Allergy, Immunology and Infectious Disease at USF where I investigated how mitochondrial genetic diversity contributes to a spectrum of clinical resistance for mitochondrially-targeted antimalarial drugs. This discovery highlighted that genetic diversity (heteroplasmy) has important implications for pharmaceutical pipeline development.

Executive Vice President, Infectious DiseaseAirfinity Ltd Apr 2023 - PresentLondon, England, United KingdomAs exec-VP of Infectious Disease, I lead the infectious disease scientific teams and portfolio, where we develop infectious disease modelling, forecasting and analytics solutions. We build digital health solutions that ultimately inform and improve the efficacy of public health interventions for the life sciences industry and public health decision makers in government organisations. Our multidisciplinary science teams are focussed on infectious disease platform development, analytical reports, and advanced disease forecasting intelligence services capabilities. I work closely with scientific partners, clients, public health organisations, and policymakers to ensure the delivery of solutions for maximum translational impact into policy. My team develops new analytical methods for modelling of infectious diseases, investment portfolio decision-making, vaccine prioritisation, and clinical trial site recommendations. -
Genomic Surveillance LeadWellcome Sanger Institute Apr 2022 - Apr 2023Hinxton, England, United KingdomGenomic Surveillance Lead for MalariaGEN at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, leading the scientific strategy for infectious disease genomics, epidemiology and translational research. We build and roll out cutting edge genomic surveillance products and services for high impact surveillance operations in malaria-endemic regions of the world. -
