Simulations using augmented and virtual reality could greatly enhance educational capabilities and have potential to improve understanding of numerous spatial concepts in many fields of study. With Covid the necessity for digital education has become apparent and has solidify the need for digital education in the future. This presents an opportunity to evolve digital learning by implementing recent technologies into courses, as is being done at York University through an AIF grant. Part of this virtual and augmented reality project deals with developing exercises to visualize and work with difficult 3D problems of a geological nature in CIVL 2160 a Geological Processes class in Civil Engineering. This 3D Structural Geology component of the project is creating a 3D simulation which strives to advance the use of virtual reality in education, while making easily adaptable tools to benefit other engineering courses. Using Unity’s real-time development platform to create digital terrain models for student interaction will be helpful in teaching 3D structural geology problems. The virtual environment provides several benefits to educate students, such as, enhanced visualization tools involving 3D views, map views and cross section views, and enhanced interaction between traditional paper-based views with 3D visualization. This will better prepare students to develop realistic cross sections needed for civil engineering in more complex geological scenarios then paper-based learning. The major benefit currently being developed is to express otherwise unseen layers below the surface, which will enhance student learning. This platform has potential applications in geomatics, environmental, structural, and other fields, which will benefit students at all levels of education.
