For the seminar Cultural History of Magic and Science, I organised lectures and an excursion to the University's Special Collections. The course was ideally suited to the interdisciplinary treatment of the history of science and medicine, focusing on the interactions between learned and popular culture. It was especially rewarding to integrate insights from my research into the larger scheme of the seminar and interact with the students.

In this position it was a great pleasure to sort and catalogue a collection of letters, drawings and engravings around philosopher Frans Hemsterhuis (1721-1790), recently acquired by the library. While there, I got acquainted with different aspects of making the collection accessible from cataloguing in the GGC, digitalisation to exhibition, and with the many responsibilities and activities that the KB takes on as a heritage institution from acquisition to preservation.

From October 2014-2017, I worked in the team of Volker Hess and Andrew Mendelsohn on the ERC research project on "How physicians know". Our research centered around the reading and writing practices of physicians. These practices together with experiment, clinical experience and observation, played an essential part in producing medical knowledge. Moreover, they enabled physicians to produce knowledge relevant to their societies and to shaping governmental policy. As part of the project, I co-organised a workshop on herbaria at the Forschungsbibliothek Gotha and co-produced a blog series on The Recipes Project, Dutch Medicines, about a seventeenth-century, Dutch recipe collection. See link below. Within the project, my subproject aimed to investigate the study of plants, animals and minerals. Central questions were: What different ways of organising writing on paper did physicians employ to produce knowledge about plants, animals and minerals? How were their reading and writing practices related to their position in society and towards other naturalists?Most recently, my paper about the intersection of medical and natural-historical ways of organising observations on paper, in the practices of two 17th-century Dutch physicians, was published in The British Journal for the History of Science. Before that, I have published about the testing of Mrs. Stephens´ stone-dissolving remedy in London and Paris around 1740, for a collaborative volume on Gutachten. I am currently finishing a paper on the vernacularization of learned medicine in the 17th-century Dutch Republic.

I conducted research and taught a reading seminar about the history of science for the master program History and Philosophy of Science at my university, and the introductory course of the master program called History, Role and Impact of the Natural Sciences.Dissertation title: STUDYING DRUG PROPERTIES AND THE FOUNDATIONS OF MEDICINE IN THE DUTCH REPUBLIC FROM CA 1550-1700.In the late 16th- and 17th-century, major changes were introduced in natural philosophy, medical theory of disease and epistemology. The study of natural history found great popularity and united people from diverse backgrounds and status in joint networks and communities. The general aim of my research was to investigate how these developments were reflected in the consideration of the properties of the materia medica in the Dutch Republic. I showed that the work of Galen (130-200 AD) had a stronger influence on medicine in the Dutch Republic than supposed until now, by studying the investigation of drug properties by Dutch physicians.In their attempts to understand the relations between various properties of materia medica within a Galenic framework, sixteenth-century physicians made contradictions within that framework visible. To some extent, this exposed prevailing ideas about matter and its properties, to criticism. Nevertheless, this framework remained central to discussions in the following century. In their pursuit of reliable ways of curing, physicians not only experienced the impact of the changes for which the Scientific Revolution is best known, but actively contributed to them. They considered how reason, sensory perception, experience and experiment could serve as sources of knowledge in their discussions about the properties of drugs. The problematic issues involved with investigating the properties of drugs were not solved by these changes however, but expressed in new ways.
