I tutored two elementary school students, who struggled with learning to read, 3 times/week in order to increase their literacy through improved letter recognition and phonics skills. As an intern, I utilized materials, including workbooks, games, and worksheets, that have been proven to increase literacy skills in young children. I helped my students build confidence in themselves by encouraging them to not shy away from the challenge of learning to read and write; I was able to see their self-confidence and reading abilities increase over the course of the summer.

I had the opportunity to intern with Chad Patrick, CEO of Mission Hospital. I spent time attending meetings and learning about the daily operations of managing this 815-bed hospital, which services nearly all of Western North Carolina, brings in over 4 billion dollars in revenue annually, and treats over 40,000 patients/year. I participated in current projects including active shooter preparedness, the construction of a new mental health hospital, attaining a certificate of need for a new hospital, the construction of a free-standing emergency room, closing out financial records at the end of the month, employee retention training, and hospital throughput.
