About Chris Thomas
Researcher. Collaborator. Consultant. Mentor. Chemist.I've spent the past 10 years in academia at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I obtained my PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences studying natural products. I developed assays, isolated compounds, investigated marine microorganisms, and published my results. I developed strong skills in HPLC and Mass Spectrometry, but also expressed and purified New Delhi Metallo-beta-lactamase 1 as a target for assays and discovered new inhibitors of this enzyme. I then synthesized and made analogues to study against this enzyme. At my defense one of my committee members considered me a "jack-of-all trades, master of none", a title that I continued to grow into at my current role.Presently, I am a post-doctoral researcher in a multidisciplinary plant pathology lab, and sit as the sole chemist of the group. Here, I not only continue to study microbes and microbial communities for their proclivity to produce bioactive natural products, I mentor students and instruct in analytical instrumentation and analysis, I collaborate with other research groups at the university, and consult for natural product labs working toward new bioactives. When it all boils down (in a roto-vap) I am a Problem Solver. I'm curious about your science and how I may be able to help advance it. I love bridging the gaps between disciplines, and leveraging my past experiences to promote success.
