Memphis Distribution Manager

Greater Memphis Area

Hired to be the Distribution Manager for the start-up in Memphis, I was to be responsible for directing and coordinating the timely shipments of both retail and E-commerce / dropship orders from the Memphis location. I would have served as the liaison between all external parties and XPO, the operating 3PL, to include the following activities: * Monitor inbound shipping / receiving processes to ensure the timely flow of goods. * Review issued work orders to the VAS area (special projects department or value-added services), review workload, and ensure appropriate chargebacks are issued when needed. * Provide direction for the 3PL and warehouse personnel in executing special programs such as pallet builds or product repackaging. * Ensure that all requests for samples or expedited handling are completed in a timely manner. * Assist warehouse personnel in setting priorities when needed. * Management and approval of all purchases, repairs and facility related decisions while partnering with the corporate office.Due to the Covid-19 concern, the company decided to move out the go-live until at least 2021, which led them to release me from employment due to lack of activity in Memphis during this time.

Jan 2020 - Apr 2020

Operations Manager

Memphis, Tn

Responsible for all receiving, storage, pick/pack/ship, and inventory cycle counting activities for the headquartered location in Memphis, TN, and the same requirements, plus screen printing, at the Reno, NV, site.Managed the Operations project requirements for transitioning the inventory from the Neese Industries facility in Louisiana into the existing 282,000 square foot Memphis warehousing location. This consisted of 20 truckloads of inbound existing inventory, then followed by direct shipments of weekly inventory from Mexico. This integration had consisted of 3500 skus total, requiring a reconfiguration of a section of the warehouse where we removed existing racking and replaced that section with shelving to accommodate the volume of skus due to the variations in shipping, where approximately 80% of the skus only had demand once every quarter, which allowed for small quantity/high sku storage.Worked closely with the onsite Radians representative at the Louisiana facility to coordinate how the shipments were to be configured to ensure smooth identification and receipt into the Memphis warehouse; then coordinated with the Customer Service and Sales teams to coordinate inbound receipts with available/open orders to facilitate order fulfillment within 24 hours of receipt.Human Capital consists of 52 full time positions in Memphis and 16 full time positions in Reno.Created a new staffing model to support the anticipated growth of the Memphis location, which was 22% in 2018 and expected to grow 16% over that in 2019. Drove a culture that emphasized open communication, empowerment, recognition and workplace safety. Worked closely with my direct reports at the Manager and Supervisor levels to build a team environment based on trust, respect, and the desire to make the organization successful every day.Focused on developing the talents and skills within my team so team members can realize and achieve their potential.

This role required a weekly physical inventory of the manual inventory areas and producing a month-end inventory report.

Warehouse Manager

Glasgow, Kentucky

Responsible for all receiving, storage, and shipping activities in the 95,000 square foot main distribution center with a staff of 38 – 2 supervisors + 4 team leaders + 2 Distribution Coordinators + 30 warehouse associates. Responsible for staffing and establishing processes for the 150,000 square foot satellite facility that was remodeled and prepared to use for increased storage and additional shipping opportunities with a staff of 6 - 1 supervisor + 1 team lead + 4 warehouse associates.. Led the receiving, storage, picking, and shipping processes for the launch of Diclofenac when it was the “First to Market” generic of its kind. Determined that the class of flammable liquid did not require Hazmat rating unless shipping via air service, thus avoiding potentially margin-breaking shipping costs. This was a multi-million dollar launch and all shipments were executed on time by planning the launch requirements and deploying team members between the two facilities to balance the launch and the daily demand commitments.Managed a “special project” for having the entire warehouse floor of the main distribution center stripped and refurbished with a new coating on the concrete to upgrade the quality of the floor. This required a plan to rotate the stock locations and engaging the team members in all areas to take ownership and participate willingly in accepting this project as a challenge instead of an inconvenience.Established workable metrics for measuring the progress of the operation, capturing data for inbound activity as well as the throughput for three different shipping protocols within the same distribution operation (UPS/small parcel, LTL and dedicated full truck load, and specialty shipping for controlled products). Strong focus on developing talent and skills within the workforce, especially in growing and promoting the leadership skills within my leadership team (supervisors and team leaders).

Distribution Center Manager

Hopkinsville, Ky

Managed 38 team members in a three-shift operation supporting both distribution and manufacturing activities. Active participant of several project teams engaged in the Distribution Center expansion project, including the “Build” and “Structure” teams. The project began with the ground-breaking in March 2007 and the 195,000 square foot Distribution Center was commissioned in April 2008. The new DC, along with the existing warehouse space, yielded 260,000 square feet of warehousing / distribution space for storage of dry goods and ingredients to support manufacturing and the storage and picking activities for the total distribution activities for the eastern United States. The “Build Team” focused on specifics of how to lay out the racking configuration for storage and picking, the design of the outbound loading doors, and the safety outline for the operation of forklifts. In this team, I was able to participate in the layout for three picking configurations - case pick, layer pick, and full pallet pick. The opportunity to include the hourly team was invaluable in determining the best configuration and providing immediate buy-in from the team who would execute the functions. The “Structure Team” focused on working with the corporate IT team to define, test, and approve upgrades to the existing inventory management system to include Directed Put Away, Directed Picking, and Labor Management functionalities. The existing inventory software was called “Eagle” and it was kept and built upon. Traveled with the corporate IT team and Distribution team from the Headquartered location in Seattle to visit other organizations to see their operations as an opportunity to share best practices. Led the Pedestrian Safety initiative and training within the plant to establish pedestrian and equipment operator “Rules of the Road”. Achieved “excellent” scoring on all external Food Quality Audits and Food Safety Audits for 2007 through 2011.

This included establishing putaway strategies for finished and dry goods, as well as the delivery and receipt from internal customers in Custom Packaging and Distribution. The volume through this DC required staffing of 4 subordinate Managers, 15 Supervisors, and 150 ~ 200 hourly employees in the daily operations of the receiving, warehousing, and shipping departments.During the 6 month period of 1/1/06 – 6/30/06, streamlined the pack out operation to reduce headcount by 5, resulting in a cost savings of $176,000; and transitioned an inter-facility inventory movement team to the distribution team, reducing headcount from 12 employees to 6 which resulted in a cost savings of $212,000 (total savings in first half of 2006 = $388,000).
