Assistant Principal (Student Relations, Safety Security)
After returning to the classroom for a couple of years, I have made the move back into a leadership position in a forward thinking district that passionately serves a frequently underserved population. As the Assistant Principal at Thornton High School I have the honor of collaborating with a team of professionals who put the needs of the student first. Through our recent adoption of the Professional Learning Community practices (PLC) our leadership team and a cohort of teacher leaders have received extensive off site training from the PLC founders / authors. Now, all staff receive regular PLC training and support from our leadership team and on site professional learning, provided by the PLC institute. The implementation of the PLC practices have supported a dramatic and positive impact on student academic performance. These efforts combined with the additional training on ELL essentials have created a positive tipping point for Thornton High School.
Founding Principal
As the founding Principal the responsibilities were all encompassing. The opportunity to have full autonomy in the hiring, staff training and designing of all internal structures was too enticing to turn down. However, without adequate support these responsibilities made the task challenging. Even with those challenges, an amazing staff was hired, trained and many systems were established that have allowed this innovative program to operate, even during times of transition.
Gilpin County Elementary Principal
Taking on the challenges of instructional leadership of any school is a daunting task even in the best of situations. Taking on the challenge of supporting a struggling school to demonstrate significant growth can be overwhelming to say the lest. However; the rewards are far greater when successful. Over the past two years Gilpin staff and students have demonstrated the capacity to take on extraordinary challenges and to overcome adversity. As a result the elementary schools culture and climate are stronger and the academic performance results reflect those efforts. The experience of leading Gilpin County Elementary School was a tremendous learning opportunity and has lead me on my journey to my next adventure. I truly believe that Gilpin County Elementary School is on the verge of breaking into a school of distinction which will support the community to becoming a district of destination.
Principal, Middle Park High School
The role of the principal is anchored in collaboration. The administrator must create a culture of shared leadership and vision, developing authentic, trusting relationships through communication and intentional transparency. The role is not singular in scope, and on various occasions the principal serves as instructional leader, mentor, and facilitator. Despite the emphasis on collaboration, the role requires that a principal be able to make command decisions for the good of the community, whether to ensure learning or safety.
Principal
I’ve been involved in the education field professionally for more than 29 years and have seen firsthand the difference one person can make in the life of another. Upon graduating from Ferris State University in Michigan, I began my career teaching automotive-related vocational skills in a career technical center. Hands-on learning is a powerful tool. After several years of teaching and continued education I earned a master’s degree in special education and transitioned to working with students with emotional impairments. A second master’s degree in educational leadership from Grand Valley State University allowed me the privilege of being part of administrative teams that shape school culture and effectiveness to an even greater degree. My greatest initiative for MPHS is to provide leadership that will facilitate a school environment that offers differentiated instruction to meet the needs of each student to the best of our ability. The educational programing that I envision must be academically challenging, engage each student by linking the curriculum to previous knowledge and experience, and also be exciting to promote further exploration of new ideas. Parents, teachers, support staff, and administration all have important roles in encouraging our students to become active learners. It is my sincere desire to provide expanded opportunities for our students to acquire the skills that allow them to become productive citizens in a quickly changing society. One way to begin that journey will be the development of truly student-centered classrooms throughout MPHS. Through a collegial partnership with everyone associated with East Grand School District, I am confident we will continue the rich history of academic and cultural excellence and led students to even higher levels of success.
