As the The Art Institute of Seattle’s in-house Art Director for eight years, I was a one-man art department. In addition to designing the school’s marketing pieces, I was responsible for all aspects of each project — budgeting, accounting, working with print vendors, going on press checks and even the occasional copywriting and photography. I designed and produced everything from the school’s newspaper ads to the catalog and website.I left AIS in 2001 to focus on full-time freelance design. Again, I had to provide my clients not only with design work, but full project management. One such project was the “Creativity Works” campaign I developed and executed for the five Art Institutes in California. This yearlong campaign included newspaper and magazine ads, outdoor, direct mail and collateral. The campaign gave the five schools a unified look and message and helped each to maximize their budgets by pooling resources. During this time, I also worked for clients such as Microsoft Studios, Saturn, Maxon Furniture and WONGDOODY.I joined WONGDOODY full-time in 2005 as an Electronic Production Artist (the job title changed from Electronic Production Artist to Studio Designer in August 2014) on the T-Mobile team. We design and produce all the materials used in T-Mobile’s retail locations. The amount of work we produce is at times staggering. Last year, I and the other T-Mobile Studio Designers produced more than 5000 projects. While my main responsibility is production, I am also often called upon to do design and layout, color retouching and photo compositing. The pace at which we operate requires a high level of accuracy, communication and teamwork. I am also the primary Studio Designer on the Alaska Airlines and Microsoft accounts.
