Managing Derelict Building Grant Program (DBGP). The DBGP targets rural areas by providing funds to communities to rehabilitate or deconstruct abandoned commercial buildings and divert building materials away from the landfill by developing new and utilizing existing reuse markets. Responsibilities for this position include conducting site visits, negotiating contracts, establishing goals and timelines, meeting with contractors and monitoring projects, having knowledge of regulatory requirements for proper handling of asbestos and other hazardous materials, and ensuring projects are complete and in compliance with terms of Agreement. Participating in Environmental Management System (EMS) team audits by visiting targeted sites, conducting interviews, reviewing policies and procedures as they relate to the EMS and reporting on findings.Review and score grants and requests for funds for both the Hazardous Waste Program and the Solid Waste Alternative Program (SWAP) that is available for businesses, nonprofits, and individuals throughout Iowa interested in reducing solid waste. Conducting research and working collaboratively with other staff to develop food waste goals and initiatives for the State of Iowa. The main focus of this project is to reduce the amount of food waste being sent to landfills and promote awareness.Developing facilitation skills by leading diverse groups of stakeholders for various efficiency and improvement processes for the State of Iowa as well as conducting program analysis.

Participated in investigations of potential and existing environmental health and safety problems and issues concerning the quality of the state's natural resources.Evaluated proposed programs, projects, grants, and/or applications from cities, counties, and regional planning commissions for funding assistance.Assisted with examining and preparing charts, tables, maps and other pertinent document for the presentation of data; and prepares technical reports of investigations.
