"Building codes and the permit process should not be so difficult to understand and implement... construction is hard enough as it is." This has been the overarching thought in each aspect of my career as an architect and structural engineer. We've created a process that brings its participants to tears, rage, confusion and frustration. Rarely do the the emotions include gratitude, understanding or even joy in regards to modern building codes and standards which keep us all safe in the buildings we occupy. Currently as Building Code Technical Lead at UpCodes, I'm part of a team developing tools for architects, engineers and contractors to properly implement codes into their designs.I've spent over 20 years in structural engineering and architectural design, plan check, and managing the plan check operations of the Santa Clara County Development Services Office and serving as assistant to the building official. I continue to be active in code consulting, as well as a bit of plan check and structural engineering as well.
