Evans. The mechanism was used to open the 2000 lb. door within the observatory, allowing the binocular telescope within to glimpse the stars. Modeling of the mechanism was done in Solidworks, and the entire assembly was fabricated in-house. Initial bench tests, which included pulling a Ford Expedition across a parking lot, were highly successful. The project was presented at the annual undergraduate research symposium.
