Group Production JournalistThe Herald Scotland May 2010 - Oct 2015Glasgow, Scotland, United KingdomI was at the heart of a busy newsroom during some pivotal stories, from the SNP winning a landslide election victory in the Scottish Parliament through to the referendum. I was often in charge of production for The Herald and Sunday Herald, with highlights including overseeing a 5am Scottish Parliament election special in 2011 and the paper’s edition on the day clubs voted against allowing Rangers back into the Scottish Premier League. While at The Herald I represented the paper on BBC Radio Scotland and STV Glasgow, cultivated a large following on social media which I pointed to our content and wrote for local titles in the United States. -

Project ManagerClyde And Forth Press Ltd Nov 2007 - Apr 2008Greenock, Scotland, United KingdomIn a wide-ranging role, I was central to the relaunch of two titles: the Saturday edition of the flagship Greenock Telegraph newspaper and its freesheet, the Inverclyde Extra. A new magazine was devised for the Telegraph and sport coverage was increased to boost the weekend offering. The Inverclyde Extra relaunch was in response to the launch of a rival free title in the area which threatened our sales and advertising. I developed a new look and workflow for the Inverclyde Extra which meant it could be produced at low-cost by one person and still contain hard-hitting news, supplemented by pages of user-generated content. The title which was launched as a rival to our papers later closed and feedback from editorial and advertising colleagues on our efforts was excellent. -
Editor, Paisley And Renfrewshire Gazette SeriesClyde And Forth Press Ltd May 2006 - Nov 2007Paisley, Scotland, United KingdomI was asked to take over a series of newspapers which had once been the fastest growing local title in the UK but had been struggling in more recent times. I worked with the reporters to ensure they were given the support they needed to improve their performances and knew exactly what I wanted from them. -
Editor, Helensburgh AdvertiserClyde And Forth Press Ltd Oct 2005 - May 2006Helensburgh, Scotland, United KingdomI reinvigorated an excellent team in what had been considered a quiet news area to push for harder news stories. We achieved huge sales through aggressive promotions and a hard-hitting news agenda balanced with traditional community stories, ensuring we retained older readers while gaining new ones. -
Editor, Sports Editor And Sub-Editor, Paisley And Renfrewshire Gazette SeriesClyde And Forth Press Ltd Apr 2004 - Oct 2005Paisley, Scotland, United KingdomAs part of this wide-ranging role I was put in charge of the free newspaper in the group, the Paisley People, and asked to relaunch it. I introduced a new entertainments section and placed more emphasis on harder news. Previously, the only distribution of the paper was being put through letterboxes (where it was often an unwelcome visitor and thrown out!) so new distribution methods were put in place in liaison with the circulation department, including pick-up points in community centres and supermarkets, to make it more of an active choice to read the paper. Meanwhile, as sports editor I expanded the paid-for papers’ coverage to ensure far more sports teams and clubs were covered, I also sub-edited for the paid-for titles and, when either the editor or news editor were on holiday, I covered the news editor's responsibilities. -
Reporter, Helensburgh AdvertiserClyde And Forth Press Ltd Oct 2000 - Apr 2004Helensburgh, Scotland, United KingdomI covered a wide range of topics and developed an ability to work to tight deadlines, which producing reports which were accurate and informative. I successfully passed the National Council for the Training of Journalists' NCE examination, the industry standard, at the first attempt and was also asked to lay out pages for both this title and sister title the Dumbarton and Vale of Leven Reporter.
