I'm a programmer focused on Java, JavaScript, micoservices with both REST APIs and messaging, and some web development. Additionally, much of my professional experience is in automated testing technology, with about half a decade of experience with Selenium (and more recent happy experience with its successors Cypress and Playwright, which I highly recommend) and about a year of helping support/maintain JavaScript's most popular testing library, Mocha. My interests in software range far and wide, however.I believe that not only code unit tests but high-level tests of business logic in real running code are valuable (and, modern tooling can isolate behavior in those high level business logic tests similarly). I also believe testing is complementary to static validation (such as compilers do with type systems), with designs that minimize the opportunity for errors (whether as general as "don't repeat yourself" or "fail fast", or specific guidelines about how to make a given language's constructs safer) and with finding the right abstractions (which shouldn't mean bloating your code with layers that hide what you're trying to control, but rather changing its perspective so that your real goals are explicit in the code rather than implicit in the details of its effects). In fact, I await the day when all these techniques are formally verified against a specification that can be automatically translated to a business agreement (because the final answer to "how do we know it's correct?" is "the customer asked for it").I've been gradually learning functional programming over the past several years (first Lisp, then Haskell), and while I haven't done much with the languages that have been teaching me, it keeps making the rest of my code both more straightforward and more flexible. I'm also crazy about databases (did you know relational normalization principles are applicable not just in SQL but anywhere that data has both structure and references?), experimenting with web development techniques that merge old-school elegance with more powerful new adaptations, and little by little working toward a world where all code worth talking about is declarative. If that sounds like someone who can help you with your projects, please don't hesitate to reach out to me!

Software Development Engineer In Tests (Sdet)84.51˚ Apr 2019 - Jan 2024Worked with a software development team to build out their automated testing and quality assurance capabilities, participating in the design, development and review of the services. (Microservice architecture with both REST and asynchronous messaging at different layers of the system.) Services integrate between internal systems and external ones, along with orchestrating data transformation batch processes. For the integrations there is a special focus on being able to handle issues both downstream and upstream.Prototyped new testing techniques and frameworks that became preferred and added support for them to the CI pipelines. Led refactoring of some of the services to be simpler under the hood yet allow greater control through configuration, turning complex systems that were hard to enhance and maintain into ones where new components are trivial changes.Participated in support rotation, resolving issues that make it past testing or that occur in the systems with which we integrate; used this experience to improve testing capabilities and error-handling design.Implemented a proof-of-concept migration of the frontend tests for another team.Worked on a team of SDETs / quality engineers to develop automated tests for a new frontend. Provided advice, guidance and assistance to junior members of this team. -
DeveloperGe Aviation Oct 2018 - Mar 2019Worked on development of a web application for data analytics, asset management and predictive maintenance with a microservice backend. Lots of team collaboration in a startup-like environment. REST API backing a modern reactive frontend. Plenty of bug fixing in addition to new features, automated tests for the backend, and engagement with product owners on design and planning. Plus brainstorming solutions to tech debt with the team! -
DeveloperResultgrid Jan 2017 - Mar 2018Developed initial product version of an app to connect simulations to internet-of-things/connected-device platforms and applications in order to drive demos and tests. Involved a combination of NodeJS development, HTTP+JSON APIs, a frontend to control the whole thing, and some example projects in at least one major internet-of-things/connected-device platform. First business focus on municipal sensor/device networks, e.g. for traffic monitoring and smart systems that respond to and help address it. (Or in marketing terms, creating tools to simulate "smart cities"!)Previously, helped develop a platform for functional integration testing of a web site/app, as well as tests running on said platform, for a major client.

MaintainerMocha.Js May 2016 - Dec 2017Https://Mochajs.OrgFor a couple years I worked on the open source JavaScript testing framework, Mocha; my focus was primarily on assisting other users, triaging issues and reviewing fixes and enhancements, but I also contributed some fixes myself and helped get Mocha's own tests adapted to run in various browsers."Real life" became too busy to continue contributing; and I think my support skills (and patience!) have since improved along with everything else. That said, it was an excellent introduction to open source work and to a variety of software development best practices, and I am very glad I had the opportunity to help! -
Software Engineer I/Application Support EngineerEcova May 2012 - Jan 2017Cincinnati, OhDeveloped scripts for a custom web automation platform, as well as analyzing recurring issues in order to recommend and assist in development of fixes and enhancements for the platform itself. Drove efforts to improve the reliability of this system and streamline maintenance of it and its scripts, at all levels (database processing, underlying platform functionality, script architecture), such that my team was able to make it scale to several times its original intended throughput while roughly halving the number of programmers needed to handle it. -
Is&S InternKroger Feb 2011 - Nov 2011Blue Ash, OhProvided both user support and user acceptance testing for a mobile workforce management application, assisted in developing and testing fixes and upgrades to this application including its backend database, corrected issues with the backend data as needed, and performed custom reporting on an as-requested basis.
