ŌKU was formed by Scott Smith out of the desire to reintroduce many of the amazing native healing plants of Aotearoa/New Zealand into a range of functional and therapeutic products. These include Teas, Elixirs, and Balms and utilise plants such as Kawakawa, Mānuka, Kumarahou and many others. Scott believes these plants have important stories (and medicine) to tell and share.ŌKU’s unique formulas were primarily developed by Scott Smith who is a Medical Herbalist and Naturopath and has been working in the natural healthcare industry both as a clinician and in product development for over 20 years. Scott is married to Helen Paul-Smith of Tapuika & Ngai Te Rangi descent and together they have run ŌKU as a family business since 2010.At ŌKU they are conscious of Māori tikanga, ‘doing things the right way’, and this helps guide their decision making processes. They promote the growing and sustainability of NZ native plants and as they continue to grow are committed to contributing to land restoration and planting projects of the native flora and fauna. As a result of this philosophy ŌKU donates a portion of the profits of every product sold to trusts specifically set up for this purpose.While ŌKU’s passion are the native plants, it is also ensuring that when they harvest from the whenua/land they do this in a way that stays true to their key foundations as responsible kaitiaki/custodians, so these plants are there to harvest from in many seasons to come.Scott and Helen try to achieve this in every way they operate as a business. I have been working in the natural health profession as a naturopath & medical herbalist since the year 2000. Through my own journey with chronic health challenges I discovered the benefits that natural therapies can offer people. Whilst i'm passionate about natural treatments, I also understand that Orthodox medicine still has an essential role to play in healthcare. I operate a clinic that treats clients holistically utilising a number of modalities I have trained in, including herbal medicine, mineral and nutrient supplementation, cell salts & bach flower remedies while also incorporating tailored programmes for detoxification, candida eradication, & wellness, amongst others. I have also trained extensively in the BodyTalk System. I emphasize an integrated approach to healthcare seeking the best combined treatments & use of modalities to help clients return & achieve the best of health & wellness.
