Profile bio

About Scott Parks

I've been a self-educated Graphic Designer, Digital Cartographer, IT Professional, University-level Adjunct Instructor, and Community Volunteer for the past 40 years. It's a career that I achieved without the benefit of a College Degree. I held the positions of Production Artist/Pre-press Technician, GSA-registered Graphics Contractor, Art / Photo Director, Creative Director, Publisher's Agent, Creative Marketing Director, Digital Cartographer, Interim Adjunct Instructor, Graphic Designer, and Laser Engraving Technician for a variety of firms serving different industries and government agencies in the Des Moines area and the Nation's Capital. During this time, I became an entrepreneur, business owner, a pioneer in the development of Postscript® vector- and raster-based digital map construction and publishing standards. My professional career included a long commitment as a community volunteer in neighborhood redevelopment, neighborhood reinvestment, small business development, transportation planning and I became the longest-serving member and chairman of a local city land development board. I'm now retired but I'm not giving up just yet. There are things I still want to do in my personal and professional capacities. I'll let you know what those capacities are in the near future.

Listed skills include Autodesk Inventor, Revit, Bim, Autocad Civil 3D, and 44 others.

Retired

Current

Des Moines, Iowa, United States

After a very disappointing past decade, when I was hoping to establish a post-career reinvention as a CAD/Revit Technician, I decided to retire and refrain from wearing myself out working at menial jobs. I'm still adjusting to retired life. Perhaps I'll try to get certified at DMACC as a CAD/Revit Technician and continue trying to find some post-retirement work in that field. My attempt to get certified at ITT Tech back in 2016 turned out to be the biggest mistake of my life. I look back on my career as a self-taught graphic designer, marketing director, founder of a digital map business, interim instructor at ISU, and chairman of the Des Moines Urban Renewal Board as jobs well done. I had a lot of great moments, won some awards, and learned a helluva lot in the process. 40 years is a good number but I still have many years of productivity left so I intend to keep myself alive by doing something I love to stay alive for a long time to come. Thanks to all those great people I worked with and for! I'm living in downtown Des Moines at the Ligutti Tower.

Feb 2022 - Present

Work Study Student - School Of Drafting And Design

Clive, Ia 50325

I was employed as a Work Study Student Associate at ITT Tech #117 in Clive, Iowa, for up to 20 hours per week. This on-campus employment program provided necessary income while I attended classes. It also made me visible and available in Lab 1 or in the LRC if fellow DDT students needed tutoring or ITT Tech staff needed facility services.

Mar 2014 - Aug 2016

Graphic Designer / Laser Engraving / Computer & Network Technician

Awards Program Services, Inc.

Urbandale, Iowa

I was responsible for designing and producing digital graphic design, production artwork and laser-engraved text / graphic attribution for corporate and academic recognition (awards) programs and associated products (trophies) and specialty performance commendations (plaques, certifications, professional and academic designations), ADA-compliant architectural signage and emergency exit floor plans for lodging properties, institutional and commercial facilities. Assisted in creative speculatory product development for new and existing clients.

May 2005 - Apr 2013

Founder, Ceo And Chief Cartographer

Mapworks, Inc.

I founded MAPworks, Inc. on January 1, 1993 in the living room of my home near Drake University. My reputation as a Graphic Designer, Cartographer and Computer Services professional was already well established in and around Metropolitan Des Moines at that time. MAPworks was a dream I realized by pioneering a process to construct, publish and license digitally-created street / location maps of municipalities in metropolitan regions. I constructed digital base maps of urban & suburban regions in Iowa and licensed value-added modifications to real estate firms, land developers, city parks & planning depts., convention & visitors bureaus, community school districts, colleges, universities, publishing, advertising & marketing firms.By early 1994, I was responsible for constructing the world's FIRST full-color indexed digital street maps for a publisher in Fort Wayne, IN. Referral business allowed me to digitally-construct additional all-street base maps for Livonia, MI, Akron / Canton / Youngstown, OH and smaller towns and cities throughout the U.S. By 1996, I constructed and licensed a digital base map of the Des Moines Metro Area to Iowa Realty for their new Realtor® Service software. MAPworks saw revenue in the six-figures when I was responsible for publishing a Des Moines Metro Street map that was sold through retail outlets. That same year, Iowa State University's College of Design hired me as an Adjunct Instructor to teach my methods for turning CAD-constructed IDOT and USGS wireframe base maps into full-color presentation maps and graphics for urban planning students from around the world. Like other small U.S. map firms at the time, MAPworks suffered precipitously when Google and Microsoft began digitizing the planet to offer FREE resolute full-color interactive mapping now displayed throughout the Internet. MAPworks served its final client in 2005. I became a Graphic Designer for a local awards firm, resigning in 2013 to attend college.
