    Detainee Custody Officer
    Care & Custody, A Mitie Company Sep 2021 - Jan 2024
As a full time employee the role required me to provide a secure environment within the detention centre. Responsibilities included induction of centre rules and facilities, running of dormitories and units which can vary between supporting and monitoring between 14 and 90 men, providing welfare assistance as and when required. Maintaining security of the building and documentation. Report writing including incidents and observations/interactions. Liaising with internal immigration as well as legal services including lawyers, refugee action groups and detainee support groups. The experience I gained through working as a custody officer gave me a good overall ground knowledge of the immigration system. I have gained understanding within the documentation side such as travel documentation, bail summaries, court procedures and similarly have gained a degree of comprehension of the legal side employed by detainees to gain bail or temporary admission. Awareness of legislation including the Human Rights Act 1998 and the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999. Working with vastly differing nationalities gave me an insight into several factors such as language barriers, country backgrounds, cultural awareness and diplomatic relations between countries. For 2 year's I was given the opportunity to work within the Security department as an analyst. This role required discretion due to the nature of reports received as well as diligence. Duties include data entry for multiple databases, collating of data, updating and follow up actions on reports and liaising with senior management, immigration and the police service. Working within this post gave me a great deal more responsibility which I welcomed and I have progressed with it learning new procedures and policies.
