My background in Industrial and Organizational psychology with an emphasis on psychometrics has led me down a path of designing high performing assessments utilizing cutting edge data analytic techniques. One of the projects I am the most proud of is leading a team of consultants, computer engineers, marketers, and business leaders to design a fully featured assessment and application portal. The site used a number of assessments from traditional personality and general mental ability to simulations assessing work skills. The output from these assessments was fed into a machine learning program leveraging Microsoft Azure to create customized hiring profiles for a client based on current applicant trends.I have done quite a bit of assessment design work primarily leveraging Item Response Theory to create Computerized Adaptive Tests. I have done everything from leading computer programmers to implement adaptive item selection, scoring, and exposure control algorithms in a backend system to large scale automatic item calibration and piloting efforts. These algorithms range from the simple 3PL for binary responses, ideal point models for the best accuracy of personality assessments, to the MUPP for forced choice items to isolate multiple competing constructs. While working with programmers to create backends I worked with teams of subject matter experts to write and pilot items for use in the assessments that have language targeting the population to be assessed.One surprising direction my work as taken me combines my love of video games and the idea that assessments should be less stressful and anxiety provoking. While working as a professor I began researching simulation and high fidelity workplace simulations as a way to hire people in a manner they are comfortable with. By using a simulated workplace environment as a test for hiring employees are able to remove the stress and let them focus on demonstrating their skills and abilities.

Primarily, I work with and lead a team of computer programmers to develop assessments for the pre-hire marketplace. I do extensive design work on creating high fidelity simulations to mimic the workplace in an online environment for highly accurate assessment of skills and abilities. My work on simulations ranges from writing scenarios and storyboarding, creating technical design documents, developing wireframes with UI/UX specialists, working with SMEs for scenario refinement, QA/UAT, scrum and ticket management, program management, analysis of items to develop complex scoring and competency targeted reporting, and working directly with the programmers to ensure a high quality product is developed and launched in a timely and cost effective manner.Outside of simulations I am also responsible for writing technical manuals and reports for the products I develop as well as former products. I handle large data analysis projects integrating internal as well as client data to answer core business questions. Part of my work in reporting relies on repeatable and automatic report generation utilizing the R programming language.I design and implement traditional assessments (general mental ability, personality, knowledge, etc.) utilizing item response theory and adaptive testing.I also work with the programmers and website development teams to do the programming of item response theory and computerized adaptive test backend algorithms. These include the 3PL, ideal point, MUPP, and other IRT models as well as item selection algorithms and exposure control safeguards. I also have been extensively involved with managing how the outcome of adaptive tests are transformed and used to create hiring profiles for clients. -
