Professor
Current
Senior Principal Research Scientist
Current Area of Research: • Genetic and environment effects on physiology and adaptation of field crops (wheat, sorghum, maize, sugarcane, sunflower), particularly where drought and extreme temperatures are an issue. • Application of quantitative approaches (crop simulation in APSIM, genetic simulation in QUGENE and statistical methods in R) and phenotyping/remote sensing (UAV aerial imaging, canopy monitoring) to integrate the understanding of interactions of genetics, growth and development and the bio-physical environment on crop yield.
Research Fellow
Researcher working on development of weather stress indicators on APSIM sorghum model, and using drought environment characterisation to interpret genotype by environment interactions in breeding and variety trials.
Associate Scientist
Research scientist developing drought-tolerant maize varieties for developing world farmers. Also developed various application tools (GIS maps, in-field data analysis programs) using crop simulation models, GIS programming tools and programs written in Pascal, FORTRAN.
Postdoctoral Fellow
Developed crop simulation model for sunflower (written in FORTRAN 77 !) which was the forerunner of library code that became the base crop model in APSIM (www.apsim.info). That model was the first to deploy a 'dynamic switching' method to limit crop growth depending on radiation vs water limitation.
