How much mechanical work does a mechanical engineer do working at an electronics company? Roughly 80% of my job is mechanical, but I’ve also gained the knowledge and experience to assemble and fix PCBs. If something needs to get done, I’m either actively working on it, or trying to learn from the people who are better equipped to be working on it. In my role as a CAD engineer at Rochester Electronics, I design custom interfacing, troubleshoot testing equipment, and build solutions. Some of my core skills involve identifying issues (both mechanical and electrical), using Solidworks to model and design new parts, and building prototypes. This has lead to getting many operations up and running in short notice as well as ensuring development of long term projects to run smoothly. My background is in mechanical engineering, but I’m an avid learner and have tried to strengthen my electrical knowledge from many of the great test engineers that I work with. I’ve learned a lot in my role that includes: troubleshooting electrical issues on PCBs, soldering skills, building custom tooling from scratch, and strengthening my Solidworks skills.
