About Scott Harkless
Hello, My name is Scott Harkless. I am a student of Library Science at Kutztown University. Currently I am on my senior semester for my undergraduate degree in LS. This may be an unusual choice, yet I believe it is the right one for me as it has allowed me to ground a diverse body of experience on a strong Library Science foundation. My focus is in archiving and special collections librarianship with interests in library advocacy, digital librarianship, and public programing. In addition to my Library Science background I also consider myself something of a historian. I grew up in a historical fabrics and costuming business that produced costuming for over 80 films and documentaries, as well as museum replicas and private costuming. I have a minor in history, and I am a living historian. This has helped me work with materials from World War II, World War I, The Civil War, and maintaining a small collection on medieval studies.I am enjoy any opportunity for experience, so please feel free to contact me concerning any need for work, paid or volunteer.

Library Technician For Interlibrary Loan
I was brought on for a contract with the International Monetary Fund as a temporary replacement for the Inter-library Loan Librarian while she was out of the country. During this time I worked with OCLC Worldshare software to support a large base of researchers in centers domestic and international through procuring through inter library loans those papers, books,and other research materials they required.
Library Intern
For this internship I was brought in for two primary tasks. The first of these involved creating a moving plan for the library's main open stacks in order to facilitate efficient use of space in an institution with the unique collection restrictions of a state library. Secondly I was brought in to identify and evaluate Pennsylvania German materials that may be suitable for digitization. However I ended up preforming no less than 7 tasks. These tasks include digitization of images for a PA history timeline, editing digitized images for Optimal Character Recognition, Producing PA state documents to support a Pennsylvania Council of Humanities speaker on Phillis Wheatley, assisting with various tasks in the rare book section, and assisting patrons with research

During this period I was gaining experience with the Library Science Collection in Kutztown University's Rohrbach library. My tasks included assisting patrons find materials, shelf reading for correctness, and page functions such as book shelving, scanning returned materials into the ILS and collecting use statistics.I was personally responsible for the mythology and folklore section.

In this project I inventoried a large donation from Pennsylvania German Scholar Francis Kline. This collection was extremely diverse, ranging from Rare Book and Manuscript materials, to artifacts and diverse media. I also insisted in the installation of folk art pieces within a museum setting. I also preformed basic conservation tasks on an 18th century German architecture collection. Lastly I worked in collaboration with the head of the center to develop and implement a professionalization project with the Center's vault.

At the end of my Sophomore year I was lucky enough to be invited to the Government Publications and Serials division of the Library of Congress. During this summer internship program I worked with two collections. The first of these I worked with was the American Comics book collection; which is the world's largest collection of such materials. I also processed materials from the FACA Collection. FACA stands for Federal Advisory Commission Act. I also job shadowed librarians in nine different divisions.

While my tasks primarily consisted of page duties such as book shelving, shelf reading, and inventory. I also assisted patrons with finding materials within the catalog and dewey decimal system.
