Practicum Student
York, Pennsylvania Area
Sport practicum is a four semester course requirement meant to give sport management students a real-life experience in the world of sports and what it means working in sports. The first two semesters are geared towards working the events so that they operate smoothly while learning the skills in the classroom and at the events that are needed in future endeavors. The last two semesters are meant for supervisory or special positions where the student runs the event or works more closely in a department that interests them whether it is communications or game operations. Each student has to complete 30 hours of event work in order to meet the program standards. As a practicum student, during the my first two semesters (Spring 2015 and Fall 2015) of the four semester practicum course requirement I did hands-on work for the college at sporting events on campus grounds. At the events, I helped to set up and prepare the playing venue for the games and helped to break down the event once the games concluded. The specific jobs I performed include: scoreboard operator, greeter, game flow, music operator, live video feed operator, participation tracker, and I worked the merchandise table. For the Spring 2016 semester, as part of an upper level practicum opportunity, I had the opportunity to make promotional videos for the Club Sports teams on campus. The purpose of this was to market Club Sports to the student body to increase signups and to help the teams retain members. For the Fall 2016 semester, as part of an upper level practicum opportunity, I was the Women's Basketball supervisor. In this position, I assigned tasks to the first year practicum students and oversaw the completion of those tasks before, during, and after games.
