Biotech Production Specialist
I worked in biopharmaceutical processing dealing with CHO cell culture, chromatography, filtration, etc. I also dealt with cGMP documentation and document support by reviewing, editing, completing, and revising completed batch records, Logbooks, and SOPs in accordance with cGMP standards and compliant with written procedure, ensuring availability of production batch records, and creating process evaluation reports, process transfer documentation, and process characterization presentations. I performed manufacturing level maintenance on equipment, monitored production processes, participated in equipment start-up, commissioning, and validation, ensured equipment operational readiness, and troubleshot in case of equipment failure. I also assisted with the training of new employees, documented my own training, and ensured all operations are occuring in a safe cGMP manner. I helped with keeping inventory of components and equipment needed for manufacturing and keep the process area stocked. I engaged with document support, quality control, and facilities to help provide full support for the process and process changeovers to new molecules.Experience with Protein A, Anion Exchange, and Hydrophobic Interaction Chromatography, Viral Inactivation and Filtration, Ultrafiltration and Diafiltration using Tangential Flow Filtration, and Formulation and Dispensing of Drug Product, Bioreactors, Wave Rockers, Depth FiltrationSoftware experience includes Unicorn, Oracle Process Manufacturing, Laboratory Information Management System, Blue Mountain, Historian, Nova Bioprofile FLEX AnalyzerHardware experience includes AKTA chromatography skids, PALL single use tangential flow filtration skids, Girton Parts Washer, Sartorius single use products including single use viral filtration assemblies
Process And Product Technology Coordinator
I worked to improve quality assurance, manufacturing organization, process technology, and customer satisfaction. In this role, I gained experience in both the quality lab conducting in-process and finished product testing and on working the manufacturing floor working alongside the operators. Gathering knowledge from other engineers, operators, and company data, I was able to complete multiple projects in my short time at American Compounding Specialties. Many tasks involved editing and creating batch record templates, SOP's, SPC's, etc. to improve quality control at the plant. My biggest project was the Flame Retardant Polypropylene Quality Improvement where I developed a standardized system for analyzing antimony and bromine content in our FR products. Antimony and bromine are required to be in specific ratios for maximum effectiveness of the product. Ravago customers would like assurance that these recipes are being followed. Using an X-ray flourescence machine, outside lab testing, and linear regression, I developed a simple process for analyzing these contents during product campaigns that our operators can use.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
The Palmer Lab's research is focused on 1) engineering novel hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs) for various applications in transfusion medicine; 2) engineering HBOCs to improve oxygen transport to mammalian cell cultures and 3) engineering mechanically strengthened vesicles for specialized drug/protein/gene delivery applications. I was part of the crystallization subgroup, focused on optimizing the crystallization process to create maximum yield of ideal size hemoglobin (Hb) crystals. The parameters for this optimization were concentration of PEG (polyethylene glycol), pH, and hemoglobin concentration. Using a light microscope, we analyzed the shape of formed crystals (rods or hexagonal). My group developed a more efficient crystallization process to the previous over the summer of 2015, increasing crystal production quantity. We continued optimization at micro-scale in order to eventually scale up for macro-scale.I was reassigned to the alginate hydrogels project in 2016. Alginate hydrogels can be used to encapsulate cells, proteins, and drugs to be delivered to patients and released within their systems. The capsule protects the product from being destroyed by the immune system. Diabetes patients, for instance, lack insulin producing islet cells which could be transplanted to them through this process. However, the islet cells are very oxygen-inefficient and need a large amount of oxygen to survive and the survivability rate of these cells before they can be released and integrated is low. Hemoglobin could in theory improve oxygen delivery to the islet cells and improve their survivability. I kickstarted the project and led the alginate group for the remainder of my time in the lab. I was able to develop my leadership skills (mainly, offering advice, training, and motivation to teammates) in this role.
Pollution Prevention Intern
The Southwest Ohio Pollution Prevention (P2) Internship Program is a partnership between Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District, Butler County Recycling & Solid Waste District, Montgomery County Solid Waste Management District, and TechSolve, Inc. The program trains and hosts college interns at selected companies in Hamilton, Butler, and Montgomery counties. The Districts fund approximately 75 percent of the internship and the chosen companies match 25 percent. The goal of the internship program is to give businesses fresh and innovative ideas about pollution prevention, save companies money through implementation of P2 solutions, give students an edge in obtaining full-time employment after graduation, and create and keep technically skilled jobs in Ohio.I reduced water consumption, energy consumption, and solid waste generation at Patheon. The internship allowed me to use engineering principles in a unique way, applying them to sustainability efforts at the site to provide both an economic and environmental savings. The projects I recommended have the potential to save a total of over $100,000 each year. One of my projects has the potential to make the site a Zero Waste to Landfill site, a corporate sustainability goal set for 2020. I implemented or began implementing several projects in my 3 months at Patheon.
