About Scott Nicol

My specialty is RF and microwave engineering, but I am capable in a wide range of fields in electrical engineering. I have been interested in electronics and electrical engineering all my life, but it was when I was a student at ITT Technical Institute that I really got good at electronic engineering design. I am able to utilize my knowledge of electronics to design and analyze a wide variety of circuits and systems. I am especially good at analog circuit design. In past jobs I have designed and built electronic testing apparatus for measuring and evaluating the properties of various electrical and electronic components. One of my projects was to design and build a circuit that utilizes the video sync pulses coming from a computer character generator, and generate a composite video signal. Another project was to utilize various chemicals and process conditions to remove the photo-resist from RF-MEMS die chips. I am skilled in using HFSS, AWR Microwave Office, LTSpice, PCB 123 and Auto-CAD.

I designed printed inductors using Auto-CAD. the inductors are printed onto PCB material using two layers and vias interconnecting them to form the turns. I then model the inductors using HFSS and obtain their S-parameter characteristics. After that I develop an equivalent circuit using lumped elements in GENESYS Eagleware so I can tune on the values until the S-parameter curie I get in Eagleware matches that of HFSS. The resulting element values are the equivalent values of the designed inductor. This project is pursuant to the design of an RF power amplifier

At Microplex I did the following• I designed microwave dielectric test coupons. This was similar in scope to the project I did for my Masters Degree thesis. I wanted to find the dlectric constant and loss tangent at microwave frequencies. With ring resonators, there occurs a series of peaks or dips in the frequency response by looking at either the S11 parameter (return loss) or the S21 parameter (insertion loss) as a function of frequency. the positions of these peaks in the frequency spectrum is determined by the speed of propagation which is inversly proportional to the square root of the dielectric constant. Thbis enables one to measure the dielectric constant with high precision. The circumference of the ring is related to the wavelength of the fundamental frequency, and the harmonics are integer multiples of the fundamental. The ring resonator design means that only the dielectric constant affects the frequency, so that removes extraneous factors from the analysis. The reason it was necessary to measure the dielectric constant in this fashion is because the data given in the data sheet is applicable to one megahertz. Since the dielectric constant can vary as a function of frequency, and since the dielectric constant can affect the characteristic impedance of the transmission line, there is a concern for knowing what it is at all frequencies of interest.• I assisted in researching and developing new via fill technology. At one time Microplex had on their staff an R&D scientist by the name of Wayne Bosze, Ph.D. He is an expert in materials science and chemistry. I assisted him by measuring the viscosity of thinned copper pastes using the Brookfield Viscometer. I assisted by taking polished cross-sections of experimental test specimens which were substrates with filled holes and subsequently fired in a furnace. The polished cross sections revealed the quality and consistency of the fill. .• I modified belt furnace for improved belt speed control.
