I joined the Marine Corps right after high school. My last day was actually on 911. I was in the gym watching TV as it happened. I finished my degrees in English and creative writing and promptly commissioned in the Army because a whole lot of my friends deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq. Some didn't come back. But I felt it was my duty to go and do my part. I would often get thanked for my service, and I would always thank them for their support in kind.
