Grill Cook, Pot Washer, Court Staff, Stockroom Staff, Cleaner ...
Life In General
British Home Stores, Bradford Court, Ais Kitchens, West Riding Cleaning Co.
I lost my way, so I dropped off the planet for a bit and did as many so-called non-skilled jobs as I could. I washed up, I mopped floors, I cooked breakfasts, I took in morning deliveries at department stores, I took payments over the counter from people who had CCJs in Court ... and somewhere during all that I grew up. It all came to an end (or rather, a beginning) when I went to Bradford Law Courts: it was a temporary contract and I was leaving a full-time job in order to do it. The man who hired me said "Ok, you can have the job, but what will you do when the contract ends if we can't keep you on?". I replied "Don't worry, I'm going back into Graphics again after this, I'm ready to do it again now". He asked "And what if that doesn't happen?" to which (surprising myself) I replied "It will".The Law Courts contract was for 6 months, I went back to him after 5 months to tell him I'd applied for a design job and had been successful, so would be leaving at the contract's end. He told me he would have kept me on anyway, but was delighted for me that it had all worked out nicely. He also said he was very impressed that I'd had the confidence to take control of things.I guess the moral here is to follow your gut feelings - before I took this detour I wouldn't have had that confidence.
