Lead Scientist I
Postdoctoral Fellow
The Gilbert lab uses tissue engineering and muscle stem cell biology to understand the underlying mechanisms of stem cell mediated skeletal muscle regeneration, with the goal of finding treatments to restore function to diseased and aging muscle.- Co-lead in developing an in-vitro co-culture model of skeletal muscle regeneration (MEndR) that can be used to assess the effectivity of small molecules in improving stem cell mediated muscle repair, as well as a tool to study the dynamics of muscle regeneration in response to injury. - Leading a team of graduate students and technicians to scale up, automate, and further optimize the MEndR assay to create a higher throughput and more accurate model of muscle regeneration.- Using single cell RNA sequencing to characterize cells present in skeletal muscle, and derive a cell-cell interaction network to identify novel regulators of muscle stem cell quiescence- Trained new graduate students and research technicians in cell culture, microscopy, and other lab techniques.
Phd Candidate
- Investigated and optimized the use of a bioactive hydrogel (HAMC) as an injectable cell delivery vehicle for in-vivo muscle stem cell transplantations to increase engraftment capacity.- In collaboration with Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR), identified 2 novel druggable targets that upon inhibition, increased the regenerative potency of cultured muscle stem cells.- Lead on an industrial collaboration with StemCell Technologies® to identify a serum-free culture media for deriving human primary myoblast cells from human skeletal muscle tissue and their long-term culture, resulting in a commercially available product.- Active participant in 4 collaborative projects, both within and outside of the Gilbert lab, resulting in publications- Prepared and optimized standard operating procedures (SOPs) for commonly used laboratory techniques in the Gilbert lab (human/mouse primary myoblast cell line derivation, muscle stem cell isolation, protein gel electrophoresis)
Bme205 Teaching Assistant
Teaching assistant for BME205 (Biomolecules and Cells)- Head Laboratory TA (2018)- Trained 2nd year undergraduate students on safe wet laboratory practices and general laboratory techniques (microscopy, protein extraction, immunoblotting, DNA extraction, …)
Library Assistant
Master’S Student
Thesis title:Effect of Temperature and Thermal Cycles on PZT Ceramic Performance in Fuel Injector ApplicationsThe project consisted of two main sections:- Determined the effect of temperature (up to 180 C) and temperature cycles on fundamental piezoelectric properties.- Determined the effect of temperature (up to 130 C) and temperature cycles on the performance of a PZT multilayer stack actuator.
Teaching Assistant - Mie 341: Cad I
Project adviser for the course project during the term, and guided the students in the complete design process of an automated traffic-barrel placement/pickup machine.
