For much of her career, Dawn Hanson was best known as a communications executive with senior leadership experience in corporations and nonprofit organizations. She offers a broad range of skills and expertise including strategic communications planning, organizational development, brand management, corporate identity development, media relations, financial communications, mergers and acquisition management, community relations, employee communications, marketing communications, and issues, crisis and change management – as well as strengths honed through her involvement in nonprofit organizations, including fundraising and development, member recruitment, and volunteer management. She also has experience in executive recruiting, diversity training, and developing multicultural teams.In 2006, Dawn founded her own business, The Fairmount Group, an independent consulting practice specializing in marketing and communications strategy and management. The company provides businesses and nonprofit organizations with counsel, training and services to build and strengthen positive relationships with their key stakeholders. Based in Cleveland Heights, OH, the business was sold in 2018 to Mallory McMaster, who now runs the firm.In 2019, Dawn and her sister Ann Ray both changed careers with the purchase of a retail store in Charlottesville, VA. Established in 2013, Rethreads is an award-winning clothing consignment destination. The multi-room, 2000+ square foot boutique-style shop offers a curated selection of new and vintage clothing and accessories for women and men, plus socks, shoes, bags, greeting cards, sunglasses and locally handmade goods.Dawn established herself as a studio artist in early 2022 at the McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville. She is a fiber and mixed media artist. Much of her work expresses her progressive worldview, providing commentary on issues of justice and equality in America – from reproductive rights to racism, gun violence and environmental protection. Her goal is to increase awareness of vital issues of our time, to build community, and to encourage activism that will result in positive change.
