I am a chemical engineer who is passionate about helping clients solve problems related to process safety and alternative energy. My graduate thesis focused on transforming energy grasses into higher value products. After my graduate studies I came to work at Exponent, Inc. in the Thermal Sciences practice. Our Thermal group focuses on projects related to chemical process safety, fire/explosion/chemical release investigation, and other projects that involve thermal systems, thermal phenomena, and the fundamentals of chemical engineering. In my time at Exponent, I've worked in a variety of industries including oil and gas, green manufacturing, food and agriculture, specialty chemicals, consumer products, as well as legal and insurance. The diversity of my work is one of the attributes I find rewarding and challenging in my career.In my undergraduate studies, I also had a diverse set of experiences. I spent my first summer at Case Western working for my undergraduate advisor's research group which focused on synthesis of functionalized surfaces for biomedical sensor applications. The next year I worked in a research lab at a small chemical company, looking at developing a new separations technique to characterize polymers. Then I was accepted in a co-op program at DuPont. There I spent 3 rotations over the next 2 years at two facilities that manufactured non-woven fabrics. I spent one rotation in the construction products business, one on the manufacturing line, and one in a business that made medical gowns, car covers, and landscape covers. Before starting graduate school, I spent my last summer working for a chemical company developing formulations for homecare and cleaning products.In addition to my chemical engineering degree, I also received a second bachelor's degree in sociology which is a bit unique for an engineer. The short story is I really enjoyed the coursework and faculty, and the sociology program was a change of pace from my engineering studies. Most of the courses I took were focused in criminology, deviant behavior, and the law. I've always viewed my sociology background as teaching me a broader view about how people interact with their environment, which gives me a unique perspective on engineering projects.I am originally from Cleveland, OH, but now call the Chicago suburbs home. I still play the occasional pickup game of basketball, but am more likely to be found on a golf course, or home brewing when time permits.
