Government Affairs Director
CurrentProvide leadership and strategic direction in the development, management and execution of the Port’s legislative and community relations program. Support and work towards advancing the Port’s business objectives and supervise a department of two employees and two contract lobbyists in executing strategic legislative and community initiatives to support the Port’s goals. Responsible for ensuring the Port has strong relationships with elected officials at all levels of government and is a collaborative partner with key stakeholders and the community. • Serve as the Port’s lead in working directly with state and federal elected officials & staff and agency representatives to convey the Port’s legislative positions through meetings, hearing testimony, briefings, etc. Directs the work of Port’s contract lobbyists in Olympia and Washington, D.C. to achieve the Port’s legislative objectives; • Supervise the Government Affairs Manager to ensure a successful local government affairs program and the Community Relations Manager efforts to establish and maintain Port relationships with community-based organizations to build support for the Port’s mission and activities. Responsible for the supervision, evaluation, training and mentoring of direct reports. Creates and maintains performance standards and works to create a high performing team; and • Oversee a $710,000 annual department budget. • Department achievements include:o $41.1 million in one-time savings for the Port through securing government investments for rail and road projects, environmental remediation, and other Port projects;o $2.02 billion in government investments in priority projects owned by others, including transportation improvements;o $9.1 million in annual savings for the Port through the passage or defeat of legislation impacting the Port’s business climate; ando Over $168 million in annual savings for Port customers through the passage or defeat of legislation impacting their operations.
