Managing the Hazardous Waste, Solid Waste, and EPCRA programs for the Public Works Environmental Department at NAS Whiting Field.

As an Environmental Protection Specialist, I act as the environmental regulatory authority on NAS Whiting Field. I ensure Local, State, and Federal regulations are followed with regard to above-ground tanks, satellite accumulation areas, solid and hazardous waste management, waste transportation and shipping, waste disposal, and spill response.

Working with the Naval Air Station Whiting Field's natural resource manager to survey endangered species including the gopher tortoise and reticulated flat wood salamander to improve their habitat. Use GPS and GIS to map endangered species locations, enter data into large databases to demarcate species movement trends. Coordinating invasive plant species herbicide applications on base. Field work consisted of using randomized plotting software in ArcGIS to create plot centers and piloting ecological analyses of wildlife, vegetation, soil, and water table. Each plot contained a 50’ transect in which soil horizon demarcation and composition, vegetation species, height, and abundance, and fuel size were determined. Ancillary activities included: operating a dry kiln, assisting with Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene Carolina carolina) tracking and telemetry, and capturing and releasing field mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) and jumping mice (Zapus hudsonius) for tick abundance, disease transmission, and overall health.
