Bennett's Barges in conjunction with Aggregate Industries are undertaking the transportation and removal of tunnel spoil along the River Thames.Working on behalf of Tideway, the main contractor responsible for the construction of London's new super sewer, Bennett's Barges utilise the new Tideway class barges, with payloads ranging between 1000 - 1600 tons. These purpose built barges are pushed along the river between loading and off loading sites, using Twin screw Nav tugs.Prerequisites for my Tug Captains role included the successful completion of a 4 day Tideway Master Course run by HR Wallingford ship simulation centre, as well as gaining River Thames Local Knowledge Endorsement - Port of London - Thames Waterman.

Robert Wynn & Sons provide clients with marine solutions for the transportation of heavy and/or abnormal loads across the UK and Europe.*Performs precision manoeuvres of a heavy lifting barge in challenging environments carrying transformers for power stations and dockside cranes etc.*Manages crews of between 5-8 with full cargoes both whilst at sea and in port, ensuring the safe passage from berth to destination*Oversees the loading and discharging of cargo in line with H&S and port requirements*Plans routes with river pilots and navigates difficult waters and harbours, monitoring the performance of the vessel for maximum profitability*Executes precision beach landings to facilitate some abnormal and oversized projects (see photograph)

Thames Shipping Ltd provide water borne transportation along the River Thames and in particular, through the busy and complex stretch of river that cuts through central London and its many bridges.As Master, a Pilotage Exemption Certificate had to be obtained in accordance with the Port Of London Authorities Regulations & Byelaws and the applied knowledge of them.Master to conduct the daily navigational passages between Gravesend and Fulham. Incorporating stringent calculations into the passage plan with regards to air draught and under keel clearances, and the provision of suitable abort points.Safely & efficiently negotiate bridges & other river traffic , whilst operating in a constant , fast paced &, ever changing environment. Fully oversee the loading & discharge of cargo.Manage a compliment of four crew whilst ensuring the company H&S , daily procedural & safety checks carried out in full.

River Humber

Ellis Offshore was founded in 2012 and is based in Aldeburgh in Suffolk and specialises in marine piling works.I worked on a Siemens project on the River Humber building a new jetty, performing barge-master duties, with overall responsibility of two construction barges supplied by Stemat Marine Services.*Moved the barge in and out of the dock/River Humber ensuring the safety of all crew, and oversaw spud leg operation whilst coordinating tugs.*Managed a crew of approx 10 men working on cherry pickers and cranes, taking instructions from the Marine Coordinator re barge movements and paying close attention to weather forecasts.*Oversaw winch operations and positioning of anchors, and their ongoing maintenance.

Land & Water is a leading dredging company and operates the largest fleet of specialist long reach excavators and floating plant.*Undertook some temporary dredging work keeping the channel and lock entrances clear, outside of my Wynn's skippering duties*Worked on the River Trent, towing and pushing dumb barges of dredging materials, on their way to specific areas to be craned out and taken to landfill sites*Kept in constant contact with the Project Manager sited on land, to take instructions, who was supervising all operations
