My experience in various management roles at Warner Electric, an Altra Motion (now Regal Rexnord) manufacturing location, allowed me to learn and practice real lean implementation in the midst of a culture dedicated to the application of the principles of ABS (Altra's version of the Toyota Production System). Working with the team at Warner we achieved almost unbelievable success, transforming our value streams, increasing EBIT, and learning the difficult art of sustainment. This firsthand experience, along with my years of experience as their ABS Leader, prepared me well for my role as a Corporate ABS Director. In this position I was able to help a group of business units craft a vision for lean value stream transformation at their sites. In every case, this vision entailed identifying, through value stream mapping, opportunities to implement flow in their traditional batch and que operations, linking through pull systems, where appropriate, implementing the Team Leader role and creating standard work with daily management. The experience in the Corporate ABS Director role prepared me well for my role with Regal Rexnord, within the Motion Control Systems (formerly Kollmorgen) division, as the MCS RBS Director. The duties of this role are very similar, the only difference being that I now only support four manufacturing sites located in the U.S., Czech Republic, and China. I am responsible for guiding, teaching, and coaching MCS sites in the concepts and culture of lean, utilizing a "hands-on" approach. Working with site RBSLs (RegalRexnord Business System Leaders) and management, we employ lean concepts and methods to drive waste reduction and flow in the businesses. More importantly, I have the opportunity and responsibility to coach and develop all levels of site leadership in the philosophy of lean; empowering them to apply these concepts in their vision, planning and daily decision-making processes.
