Electrical Engineer Iv
Principal Engineer
• Led the electrical design for an update to two LRUs in an EW system for a military aircraft. Effort included four new circuit card assemblies (CCAs) and an FPGA to replace the legacy designs. Designed one of the CCAs and oversaw the completion of the remaining three to ensure that budget and schedule were met. • Designed electronics for a 10-for-8 redundant Ka-band LNA system for space applications. Electrical design consists of two CCAs to provide LNA power, ferrite drivers, and fully redundant control via a Microsemi FPGA. Implemented FPGA and test benches for simulation in VHDL. Prototype testing of unit was successful in demonstrating full compliance to the program requirements. Awarded three patents for a new matrix-based approach to driver designs on this program, with one still pending.• Developed several CCAs and FPGAs for the Iridium Next Fast Switch Matrix program, an L-band 32x48 bidirectional switch matrix for the next generation of Iridium satellites. Designed fully redundant controller boards to process the external SpaceWire interface and control the RF switch matrix based on the desired command and timing. Implemented three different FPGA designs in VHDL. Supported test and manufacturing efforts for breadboarding, qualification, and flight hardware.• Completed electrical design for the BRsA (Beam Router sub-Assembly), part of the Radar Doppler Altimeter for the ExoMars mission. Supported breadboard efforts to verify the design prior to production. Product passed all qualification testing and was successfully shipped to the customer and launched.• Worked with an external defense supplier to develop an electronically steered antenna (34-36GHz) prototype for use on a demonstration. Designed CCA with 8 phase shifter drivers and 200MHz FPGA in VHDL. Prototype hardware was delivered on schedule and was successful in the customer demonstration.• Awarded Outstanding Engineer in 2013 and Bravo Award in 2014.
Staff Engineer
• Involved in a proposal for the Hylas-2 satellite program. Customer required a new design of dual redundant Ka-band LNAs and external power converters (EPCs). Worked with the customer to define the interfaces to the LNAs and EPCs as well as the product specifications that could be met. Contract was awarded based on this proposal ($5.4 million).• Designed circuit card assembly for the Hylas-2 program to provide redundant ferrite switching and regulated power for the LNAs. Performed analysis and simulations of the design as required by contract. Managed design of power supply with external supplier. Held PDR and CDR design reviews with the customer. Supported all qualification testing efforts (Functional, EMC, TVAC) as well as test and manufacturing of flight hardware. The hardware successfully shipped and launched.• Led design effort for a new low cost ferrite driver. Design significantly reduced both the size and cost relative to heritage designs. This design was used as the basis for the driver on the Hylas-2 program.• Worked on a ferrite driver/phase shifter design for the TDRS-K Autotrack Modulator. This involved updating the schematics and board layout to meet new specifications and address previous design issues. Performed breadboard testing and all required design analyses. Supported test and manufacturing for qualification and flight production. The flight hardware was successfully shipped and launched.• Supported electrical design efforts for proposals on two programs: Iridium FSM (~$21 million) and ExoMars (~$2 million). Contracts were awarded for both programs.
Staff Engineer
• Worked with design team to implement a new electrical architecture for use with next generation products. Design based around the Marvell PXA320 processor. Responsible for several key aspects of the design including the memory interfaces, the main Actel ProASIC3 FPGA, and a Freescale HCS08 microprocessor based power manager/battery charger. Design was fully functional on the first engineering prototype.• Assisted in the integration of the PXA320 architecture into a new MX9 terminal. Responsible for one of the carrier option boards as well as parts of the CPU board design. Received company award for project supporting the largest MX9 customer. Designed automotive SEPIC converter for the MX9 vehicle cradle accessory.• Implemented enhanced features to the highest selling MX7 terminal such as backlighting and a new imager.• Led the electrical implementation of the RoHS compliance project. Responsible for achieving full compliance on both the MX3X and MX5X terminals. Trained team members to complete work on remaining products.
Senior Electrical Engineer
• Successfully led hardware design on company’s flagship hot melt system, ProBlue. Modular design allowed for reuse of parts, reduced inventory in factories, and ease of field upgrade for customers. Significant gains made in quality over legacy controller.• Designed nine unique circuit boards on ProBlue project. System CPU board based on Freescale HCS12 processor. Main Board contains CPLD, analog interface to RTD sensors, I/O, and AC-DC power supply. Awarded patent for Hose/Gun modular design, which controls power switching of heaters. Remaining six boards handle optional features such as I/O expansion, control of additional zones, and transducer interfaces.• Initiated cost reductions after completion of ProBlue project, realizing savings of more than $250,000 per year.• Developed hardware and software for EPC-15 pattern controller. Single board design contains Freescale 68HC11 processor and external memory, solenoid drivers, and LCD-based user interface. Software written primarily in C with some assembly.• Designed operator interface for EPC-30 pattern controller. Contained custom LCD and 68HC11 processor.
Co-Op
• Developed C++ software for a traffic management simulator. Assisted in system level design and test.• Designed board level hardware using Xilinx FPGAs for a system that diagnoses F-15 Tactical Electronic Warfare System (TEWS) components.• Programmed Windows application software in C++ to interface with TEWS system.
